GPL running too fast

by John Righett » Wed, 30 May 2001 12:59:05

Hi, I recently rebuilt my PC with win2k, and last night installed GPL with
the 1.2 patch and the D3D patch.  It looks great but runs at about 2x the
normal speed (or 'timing') of the game.  I've checked out a few FAQ's
without any luck, I've grabbed the CPU speed fix from Papy's site, but I'm
runnung a Celery II clocked at 850, so I don't think this would apply, any
thoughts?

pc specs:

Voodoo 3
128mb ram
abit bh6 mobo
everything else fairly standard.

thanks
John.

You should just give the speed patch a try. It can't hurt, especially if you
just installed GPL.

What about when you run the cpu at normal speed?

but ran fine (but slowly) when at normal speed.

Had no probs with gpl though.

Yep, I would guess that you are using the latest driver from the 3dfx site?
You need to knock back the Voodoo 3 driver to an earlier version.  I had
exactly the same problem until I went back to the 3dfx driver that ships
with Win2k.  Drove me nuts for weeks.

Run it in glide instead.

Installing the CPU speed patch would definitely be worth trying.  I found a
spare P2-400 machine running Win2000 which happened to have a similar
problem with GPL (basically it seems to lie to GPL about it's CPU speed),
but the new CPU speed detection code in the patch cleared up the problem.

Why are you running D3D on a V3?  Glide will look better and run faster in
GPL on a V3.

Thanks everyone for your help.  I tried the CPU speed patch last night and
it worked wonders, now GPL runs as it should, beautiful & fast.  It was
probably like Eric suggested that the CPU was being oc'ed that caused the
problem.  Thankfully all is quiet on the western front now...
