GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

by Jenera » Sat, 03 Mar 2001 02:58:39

Am I the only one a little peeved at Nvidia's pricing of the GeForce 3? From
what I hear, the card manufacturers are looking to release the cards at
$500-600 US!!! To make matters worse, Nvidia is using under-clocked chips to
facilitate the "fall refresh". At this rate, no wonder PC *** is falling
by the wayside. Every time we look around, developers are dropping plans for
a PC version. The good thing for us is that certain types of games will
always be better on a PC. Hell, I just spent about $600 US last year
updating my rig (GF2, CPU, RAM) to play the latest sim racers (not including
my MSFF wheel)!! Who can afford to buy a $500+ US video card every year or
two AND keep their processor current at the same time?

With the impending release of the X-Box (which has a 250Mhz Nvidia chip AND
64 MB DDR btw) I'm beginning to feel more and more like I've been a beta
tester for Microsoft. I would have no problem with video cards coming out at
$300 US but the current SRP is ridiculous. I'm sure Nvidia will justify it
by saying 'the development costs are huge for this GPU'. Right, like MS
didn't cover most of those and the millions of GPU's they'll ship in X-Boxes
won't cover the rest.

I guess this is the aftermath of 3Dfx closing its doors. No competition. Our
only hope for 'reasonably' priced cards in the future is ATI. If they fail
to keep Nvidia honest, PC *** will either become a very exclusive club or
a club with Grand Prix 3 quality graphics ( in other words, 3 year old 3D
engines).

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

I see people getting into a tizzy about this on multiple newgroups.
The solution is SO simple... You don't buy the card for $600.
Wait until the price is right for you. I made the mistake of paying
$200 for a Sierra Screamin' 3D. Within 4 months, they were going for
99 bucks.
I now simply wait for the cards to come down to what I want to spend.
I have since purchased a Voodoo2, a TNT, a TNT2, and a GeForce2 MX for
under $130 each, which each still had plenty of *** life left in
them.

I'll buy the GeForce 3 when it's under $200 (probably about 9 months
from release). By then the drivers are in their second or third
revision and you know all about which older sims have problems with
the new card.

If you feel obligated to stay on the bleeding edge, you gotta quit
whining take your ass-pounding like a man. ;-)

does anyone *really* need to get the latest and greatest cpus and video
cards?  I don't think so.  OK, so you may not get 100 frames per second
with year old gear, but does it really matter?

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

Well said Tim.
Along the lines of the old saying, "If you have to complain about the price,
you cant afford it"
I am still using my GF DDR i bought 3 months after it was released. The
price dropped enough where i felt i could justify the upgrade over my TNT2
Ultra. I skipped the GF2 familily. I will purchase a GF3 maybe 3-6 months
after they are released.

I want high quality FSAA with little FPS loss. The Geofrce3 provides
that. Who's getting 70fps in todays sims on even a 1.2ghz T-Bird?
Games like N4, F12K, Falcon 4 need all the help they can get.

Also the GeForce3 gets beaten by the GF2 Ultra in most DX7 benchmarks so if
you have an Ultra there is no point upgradeing untill games start to use
DX8.

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

by Kai Fulle » Sat, 03 Mar 2001 13:08:02

Yeah really,

I'm still on a 16 MB TNT 1, and am just now starting to get beat up, that's
with N4...

FIFA2001
NBA LIve 2000
Fleet Command
MTownM 2
GPL
SCGT
Homeworld
Rogue Spear
X-Wing Alliance
SSHHB2001
PGA Champ Golf

They all run great, can't say N4 does though (sue to my opinion that it's
poorly optimized.)

anyhow I made it through TNT2, GeForce and GeForce 2 without even thinking I
need to upgrade...

so come on guys, your all buying into that you need to buy a new card every
6 months, when in reality you might just have to run it in (god Forbid)
1024x768x16...

I'll buy the best card when WSC comes out.

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

by Dave Henri » Sat, 03 Mar 2001 16:08:12

Thanks Thom....The Herc and other 2nd generation Rendition cards
didn't work 100% with CART/ICR2 3d.  It can be MADE to work, but
I'd rather go with the older 1st generation V1000 Rendition card.  that way
I'll have complete compatibility without having to run a bunch of bat files.
I'll probably use my leftover PIII so I'll have cpu horsepower to spare and
I won't lose much speed using the older card.
thanks again

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

by Kirk Hous » Sat, 03 Mar 2001 16:17:44

I hate to sound like an Nvidia groupie but I read that most of the cost of
the card is due to the current prices of 64MB of the DDR RAM.  A 128MB board
would cost you over $1000 and there are no 32MB GF3 cards.

p.s.  In 32bit color GF3 beats the GF2 Ultra in 99% of the benchmarks
with beta drivers.

pps I wouldn't pay $600 for a video card let alone $300

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

by Loosa » Sat, 03 Mar 2001 18:39:58

From what I can remember, isn't the $600 Geforce 3 due to debut  at 200MHZ, and
yet the version of Geforce 3 in the XBOX is due to be 250 MHZ, and was
originally due to spec at 300 MHZ according to Microsoft. This would imply that
faster versions will come out in short order( since the chip is likely
underclocked), and will push the price of the initial version down into sub
$200 territory by Christmas time, no doubt. Anyways, they have to have a low
end version and a mid price version to cover all of our various price points.

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

very easy : NEVER NEVER NEVER buy ANYTHING when it is released, wait for 4-6
months, you'll get the patches, driver updtes, and price slashed by 2

for your info the geforce 2 sells in france for less than 100 bucks, and I
don't think the GF3 will be 5 times faster, so why pay 5 times the price ?

GeForce 3: Pricing Scam?

Sadly Dave I had 2 Screamin 3D's by Sierra but sold them over a year
ago or so {Sorry} and 'yes' I paid the $200 for those devils when they
first came out too..eeeeeeeck .. Thom_j.

|   Thanks Thom....The Herc and other 2nd generation Rendition cards
| didn't work 100% with CART/ICR2 3d.  It can be MADE to work, but
| I'd rather go with the older 1st generation V1000 Rendition card.  that
way
| I'll have complete compatibility without having to run a bunch of bat
files.
| I'll probably use my leftover PIII so I'll have cpu horsepower to spare
and
| I won't lose much speed using the older card.
| thanks again
