Why Convert LWFF to Ball Bearings?

by KelunaBo » Sun, 19 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I noticed several references to converting the LWFF to ball bearings, or taking it apart to lubricate the bearings.I have no doubt that this would work, but why should I have to do this, where is Logitech in all of this?

This product has been out for at least one year, and based on the posts I have read on this NG, I'm not the first to experence this problem. I read about this problem before buying the wheel yesterday, but decided that it won't happen to me, and if it did, I could live with some slight noise. But this squeaking is loud and distracting, and to me, bespeaks of a poorly designed and or constructed product. An early indicator of other problems to come.

I will be returning the wheel today, after roughly 30 minutes of use. Why should I spend $160 of a product that requires backyard modifications to fully enjoy? There are many other FF wheels to choose from.

Even with the squeak, which hasn't lead to any failures that I'm aware of, the LWFF is still the best FF wheel on the market, IMO.

The ACTLABS wheel is reported to also be a great wheel. But other than these two, I don't know of any other desirable wheels w/FF.  The Microsoft wheel is supposedly a good wheel, but uses far to much CPU resources to allow the great games to run effectively.

The bearing upgrade on the LWFF would be an upgrade, not a fix.  The squeak isn't there in everyones wheel, so you might want to return the wheel for another LWFF which doesn't squeak.  As for mine, the squeak isn't noticable above the rumble of the engines.  Of course it does blend nicely with the tone of voice my wife uses to encourage me to turn down the volume<g>.

The ball bearing conversion takes out ALLl slack from the wheel.
The squeaking stops, but there is still little noise from the motor.
Steering and FF gets much more sensitive.

IMO for $160 its not possible to sell a top end wheel INCL. good FF
