Does anyone recommend NFS for the PC. I believe it's supposed to be
pretty good but how does it compare to NFS 2 & 3.
Also, by how much does it differ from NFS 2 & 3. Does it have tournament
options etc.

Cheers,
Mike

NFS SE, is considered the best of the entire series by most folks. The
graphics are a tad dated, but the driving physics are easily the best of
them all. I still have it, and I like it better than all the rest, the only
reason I like NFS 3 is that you can put in user made cars, if that isn't
important to you, get NFS SE.
If it's cheap, get it. You'll at least get your money's worth.

The original (the NFS1 SE version) is a thousand times better game
than NFS2 & 3. Graphics a little outdated but not too bad and the
frame-rate will kick on any modern computer. There are so many ways
it's a better game:

- Mix of circuit tracks and long, realistic "open road" tracks
- Somewhat realistic driving model, with different cars that actually
feel different to drive, and feel as you would expect the real-world
car to drive
- AWESOME collision/accident model. Realistic collisions and accidents
will blow you away - and probably ruin NFS2 and 3 for you with their
retarded "150mph head-on fender benders".
- Hacked track format. Track editor and dozens (hundreds?) of modified
tracks available for download from the net.
- Because of the realistic accident physics and open-road tracks,
there are also realistic police-car chases (through traffic) that will
make you feel like you are in a movie.

From a purely gameplay standpoint, NFS SE beats the ***out of the other
two versions by far. Sure the graphics are on the old side, but there's
nothing like the feeling of trying to outrun a cop car in the mountains or
along the seaside while trying to dodge oncoming traffic at the same time!
It's one game that I can say I will probably keep on my computer for quite
awhile.

Not sure why the developers went to a closed circuit format instead of
three-stage open road format. I guess they just wanted to cash in on the
popularity of the original NFS... Oh well, you should be able to get the
original version for 20 bucks or less now... I think I've seen it at CompUSA
in the clearance bins for like 15. It's a great deal!

NFS1 is definately better than the 2nd one, and don't know about the 3rd one
because haven't played it yet.

The only one I've played is NFS 3.  What a blast to play, truly a great
game!

About: Need For Speed

As the five other people who have already replied to you, I will say
the same thing: NFS 1 SE kicks all its current sequels right in the
buttocks. The only thing I couldn't get used to anymore, when I
installed it a couple of months back, was the small number of frames
dedicated to the wheel movement, but back then it was year 3 or 4 BP
too (Before today's Polygon-engines). The game totally owns otherwise.

You buy NFS 1, 2 & 3 as an arcade blast and all three are good for that. The
main difference is that NFS3 has  graphics to drool over so if you have a
high spec pc with a Voodoo2 card (SLI is truely awesome) or equivalent and
care about high quality real-time rendered graphics, then buy this one.
