Need For Speed add ons?

    Hi,

I just picked up the 3.7mb demo of EA's Need for Speed, and I
am really impressed.  If I do buy this game, will I be stuck with
the same old stuff, or is EA planning on coming out with add on
disks for tracks, cars, etc?  (a la Test Drive III).  I've had
a few games of this type, but they were all sort of mediochre...
NFS is the first driving game (demo, technically) that's made me
sit back and say "WOW!".  The first I dropped the clutch on the Viper,
I could almost smell $600 in tires going up in smoke...

I'm hoping to get the full CD version the next time I'm out to
the store, especially if EA is going to support this game with
future add ons.  Has anyone heard anything?

   Thanks!

                                              -Jon-

Well, they just might, but for starters, the game
has 6 tracks, which is twice what the original (3DO) version
had.  It's also got a bonus track and a bonus car which are
fantabulous.  I wouldn't exactly call it a skimpy game by
any means...

Well, here's a hint:  to get the extra car (and
some other fun stuff), you need to do axactly twice as much
as you did in getting the extra track.  After you've done
that, be sure to check out the credits.

It should be easy to make car and track upgrades.  If NFS gets popular
enough (in sales), they will probably make some add-ons.  I'd like to
drive a Vector, or a McLaren, or a Ferrari F50, or, or...

Hmmm.  So I'd have to win the turny *twice*?
I have yet to win on any track but rusty, so
that should be quite awhile in the future.
Do I have to use the same player name or what?

What do you mean by doing exactly twice as much as you did in getting the
extra track? please explain (layman terms) what we have to get the extra track
& car. Thanks.

A 20 or 30 CD ROM set of "Race Across America" scenery would
be cool (dreaming again).  Authentic state patrol cars, authentic
Interstate route...   Actually,  I'd guess we'll see tracks instead
of cars for add-on, even though they've fairly well represented
most of the terrain you'd want to race on...

Well....you could always make the computer *think*
you had won it twice...

Personally, I'd like to see a few more "down to earth" cars made available.

I'd kinda like to see how an MR2, Eclipse, 300ZX, 3000GT-VR4, or even
something as mundane as a Firebird Formula or Mustang Cobra would do on
some of those tracks/roads.

Of course, ultimately, I'd like to see the NFS engine used to do a decent
motorcycle simulator, but I guess this is kind of the wrong newsgroup for
that.

Please Lyle, don't give them any ideas, they already have some pretty
lame cars in there, namely the 911 and the RX7 (which if the models
of the cars performance is based on reality, Porsche needs to sell out
and make vacuum cleaners, the car can't get out of it's own way).  The
Acura NSX is a bit gutless on twisting turns but great on straights
(too bad there aren't alot of straight lines on the tracks).  The car
in the game that surprised me the most was the Viper, very solid
and...American made.  The Vette is so-so in the game, you never
see it win.  One car that saved my bacon on winning some races
in the tournament mode is the Toyota Celica Supra....a real rice
burner, buzzy, torquey and you can toss the nose around a bunch
and the car is very forgiving.  Since I can't afford a Ferrari or
Lambo at the moment, the Supra would be a nice $250,000-less
compromise.  I do agree with the 300ZX (Twin Turbo) idea and
maybe the 3000 (If they made it the Spyder and put the top down).
I'm wondering where the Lotus is....

SC

:-)  Yeah, that'd be neat!  Along with some of those cars out in the
stratosphere, of course.  :-)  It would be kinda neat to see how
an "ordinary" car would take those courses...  Immagine doing some of thse
courses in a Honda CRX, a Dodge Dakota, "ordinary" cars, though I don't
think there'd be enough interest to make it worth R&T's or the programmers'
time...

: Of course, ultimately, I'd like to see the NFS engine used to do a decent

That would be really great!  R&T was the one who did that huge 0-100-0
compro and threw in a ZX-7 for kicks, which proceeded to thrash the
cars so bad that it wasn't even funny.  :-)  I'd love to take some of
these tracks on a ZX-11, FZR1000, etc.

Thought of something else... What about a utility that would allow you
to build your own car?  You could choose body panel shapes, or cut your own,
choose a realistic (or create your own fantastic) engine, and then load these
cars in.  I'd love to give all the computer opponents Ford Festivas, and
then pull in some 4000hp beast with 3g's of cornering ability, etc. for
myself...  :-)

Hey, I'd pay more than the game cost for something like that!!!

BTW:  I'm not really familiar with games of this type... How would such
add on cars be used?  Do you load them from the game, or copy them over
the original files, or something?

Well, I've rambled way too long!  :-)  I hope someone from EA is
listening, and that NFS's sales do great...  I'd love a car/track editor...
That would be even better than add ons, IMHO.  (Course, if they want to
give us *both*... ;-)

With the old test drives, you'd have add-on disks for the cars and the tracks.
I used to play test drive II on my IIgs, and I had do quite a lot of disk
swapping anytime I used the addons.  I'd imagine any upgrade for NFS will have
you swapping CD's, or just copy some stuff to the hard disk.

That would be cool.  I'd especially like to see a computerized remake of
Connecticut's Route 9.  Another great add-on would be the M3 BMW and the Audi
A4, and something more down to earth like a Yugo..  You could drive it against
traffic and see how far up in the air the on-coming traffic could knock it.
