TOCA2 problem

by Mark » Wed, 02 Aug 2000 04:00:00

All of a sudden I can't get TOCA2 to work any more!

I've be playing it without problem since the day it was released over a year
ago and it last worked OK a few days ago.  Now when it comes to the track
loading screen, the thing slows to a staggering crawl.  The hard disk is
churning away like mad but the progress bar hardly moves.  I let it go for
over an hour and the progess bar only got to about halfway then stopped,
although the disk activity continued.

I really can't understand what's changed with the PC.  Since I last played
it successfully I upgraded from an AMD K6-2 400MHz to a 500MHz version.  As
an experiment I switched back to the 400 but it still didn't work.

Full system is AMD K6-2 500MHz on DFI P5BV3+ mobo (VIA Apollo 598MVP AGP
chipset), 128Mb RAM, SB Live!, nvidia TNT2 M64 graphics with latest
reference drivers.  This combination worked fine (with the 400MHz CPU) until
a couple of days ago.

The only other change that I can remember was to install GP3.  I tried
repeating this on another PC but TOCA2 worked fine on that one after the
install.

Any suggestions anyone...otherwise I'll have to re-install Win 98 and start
again.  Doh!

Cheers...Mark

TOCA2 problem

The old AMD vs Toca struggle. Took me a year to figure it out, or
thereabouts. Seemed to stump everyone, and the only solution I found was to
buy a util called powertweak at www.powertweak.com or www.powertweaks.com ,
I forget which. There's a 30 day version which will work, too. There's
something volatile in there, and I'm not entirely sure what it is, but
that's yer problem.

Thanks Colin, but I'm not convinced that it's the AMD that's at fault.  I
say that because I've been running the game without a hitch since it was
released in April 99 on the same motherboard/CPU combination but in the last
few days fo no reason that I can see it's stopped working.  Also there's a
bloke who, by co-incidence, has posted on Mark Rael's TOCA2 site with
exactly the same problem but he's using a Pentium III.

I'll still probably try the trial version of Powertweak though so thanks for
the tip.

Actually, mine worked perfectly on the AMD until I ran Norton's "file
optimiser" or whatever it was called. From then on, I had the exact same
problem, and the only solution was as I mentioned earlier. If you get a
definitive answer, I'd love to hear it!!

Hmm...I just thought the menus were SLOW...  It didn't take as long as the
other person, but it took longer than I expected...

Are you using Nvidia Driver 5.xx if so this is the problem. I know it's a
pain but the only way I've found is to install Old Video Drivers as there is
a know bug with Toca2 and 5.xx... For now I'm sticking with 5.33 and waiting
for the new Toca Game...

Cheers, Jason

Have you tried re-installing TOCA2?

Sorry, I heard rumour that Toca World Touring Cars was going to be released
on PC, but I've just been told by Codemasters 5 Mins ago(Thought I'd best
check) that they're not going to and it'll only be for the Playstation Now.
Bah!!!
