What sim should I plump for?

by DB » Thu, 12 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Bit of a dilemma here. I love the physics engine in GPL, but I don't
find the era of racing very exciting- the cars are boring and there is
no atmosphere or drama at the races. OTOH, I love F1, but the physics in
MGPRS2 are pathetic and the game is ridiculously buggy.

I used to love playing GP2, but lent the CD out and haven't seen it
since, so what sim can someone suggest for me to spend my time on. I'm
tempted to either get GP500 when it comes out, or just get GP2 on budget
again.

Of course, the big sim for me would be GP3, but I'd love a Papy CART sim
using the GPL engine.

Cheers...

You've got a lot of company.  But Lord knows how long the wait will be?  So
go get GPL now, get onto VROC, and have a ball!

I am considering trying Official Formula 1 Racing myself. The posts about it
in this group have been quite positive.

I still play GP2 a lot (www.lfrs.com). Here in Holland GP2 is in the shops
again for Dfl 30,- (About $15).

I also play GPL. It's great to race online, but I find you have to be soooo
careful driving a GPL car. In GP2, you can throw the car around a lot more,
outbreak other cars easier etc. That's why I came back to it.

This will definitely change after your first online race. I did not think
too much of the sixties either before playing GPL, and now I am the proud
owner of "Grand Prix: Portraits of the Sixties" by R. Schlegelmilch and read
it every three months or so. OTOH, modern F1 has lost much of its attraction
for me ever since playing GPL.

Well, MGPRS2 is ok for a quick race on Thursday night before the real
GP weekend. It's not the best F1 sim ever, but it allows you to get
into a rythm if you take the strange driving physics for granted, and
it is incredibly hard to be competitive in.

Yep, that would be heaven. Only if there is a Linux port, of course,
otherwise I will not buy it (GPL being the last ever Windows only
game I shelled out money for).

Unfortunately, I'm in Britain, and I've only got a 36.6 connection so
it's normally impossible to find decent pings to connect to.

Add that to the fact that I can't play GPL atm because the 1.1 patch
gives me SLOMO probs...

I have thought about it. MGPRS2 is just rubbish to drive IMHO.

I used to drive in LFRS some seasons ago with my team, Monkey Grand
Prix, but I found it got a little over complicated with all the new
classes. I think GP2 is available here for 12.99

8 classes is complicated for team managers, not for the drivers :)
The new rules have yet to come out, expectation is less classes in the new
season.
