Why does Microprose and Papyrus ignore Kali?

Why does Microprose and Papyrus ignore Kali?

Last I checked, the highest serial number for Kali I of is in the 5000's.
With Kali growing so fast, and Kali95 on the horizon (its painstakingly
simple to set up, practically as easily as running mIRC), How could
Microprose/SpectrumHolobyte and Papyrus be ignoring the potential
for racing games over the internet? It looks like Interplay with their
'Whiplash' game might be the first decent internet racing game, too bad it
lacks all the settings like tire pressure, gear ratio, etc stuff.
I'm told that NetMech was originally Netbios but they decided to switch
to IPX because its faster and the numerous users of Kali, smart choice
in my opinion...

I'll tell you EXACTLY why Papyrus, Microprose, et al won't support
Kali.  Ever hear of proprietary online services?  Papyrus' multiplayer
service?  GEnie, etc.?  You don't make money using Kali over the
Internet.

Note that I'm not slamming Papyrus or Microprose -- it's just bad
business sense to support a Kali option when you can charge for your
own online service.

kali is a packet driver that allows you to play networkable games over the
internet....but no....i doesnt work with nascar or icr's.
it works with descent and doom and stuff

Just my personal opinion, but it would seem that the most sensible
approach at this point in time would be to write for Windows 95, and
make use of the built-in TCP/IP stack for playing directly accross the
internet (and any other net you might happen to have lying around :-) .
The IP suite is _the_ protocol family to write for - anything else is
living in the past.

Yeah, but surely it's not just good business sense - it's much
easier to guarantee good data rates and, more importantly,
response times with a proprietry service (such as GEnie or Hawaii)
rather than the Internet. Otherwise, you're going to get cars
jumping all over the place or disappearing all together.

One small question Tony, where is this online service ? I know Papyrus
like to talk about it in magazines and stuff but it does not seem like we
will see it anytime soon. Ever tried to connect to GEnie from
Australia????

Does Kali support multi player games (ie over 2 players)? If not, I
don't see why special networks and Kali couldn't both be supported.

Speaking of *** networks. Anybody know if XBAND PC will be
supporting racing?

XBAND PC is in beta test. Check out their web site for more info:

I'm not sure I agree.  SH/MPS just released TopGun, and it works fine
over Kali.  I think the real problem is with delays, and lags as they
would relate to any racing game.  Anyone that has played AW  or WB has
seen delays, and warps.  How could they be over come in a racing game
where you are side by side for most (if not all of the race)  You have
one person that has a bad connect, and you would be having a wreck
every minute!   Maybe when we all have ISDN lines?

What are you talking about? Never played Nascar from Papyrus?

Dave.
