GPL in national newspaper shock !

Imagine my surprise when opening todays motoring supplement of the
Daily Telegraph (a kind of English New York Times I guess) to see a
screenshot from GPL on the front page and on page 5 an in-depth
feature on the game, recommended as a Christmas buy for petrolheads.
The article runs to about 450 words i suppose and is a clear
endor***t for the product we know so well. In time the review will
be on the papers web-site but not apparently yet, they seem to delay
some of their articles for a few days.   The funniest thing was the
recommended computer spec in the article: PII 266, Voodoo 1 or 2 or
Rendition 2x00.  On a more serious note, GPL is hard to find in the UK
now,  and expect a lot of calls to this forum after Dec 25th.
How many 3 year old games get this treatment I wonder ?

At least the English press have the good sense to appreciate motorsport and
the people who love it.  Mabey Papy will have to reissue this wonderful
antique title.

Or not.  To give you an idea of how heds-up both the crack Papy p.r. team
*and* the wizards at Car and Driver are, Alison Hine writes to say the
latter ran a piece on computer auto racing in the December issue which
contains nothing on either NASCAR 4 or GPL.  There's never a cop when you
need one.

I saw that article too and was surprised given their previous high praise for both.  In fact, it was a C&D article a few years back
on GP2 and ICR2 that originally piqued my interest in sims.  I'd never had the slightest interest in computer *** before...  (Was
that yours?  If so, thanks!)

In their defense, editor Csaba Csere DID recently do a piece on a 24-hour endurance race at the Ring, where he co-drove a Ford Puma.
Said his only prior experience at the Ring was 20 laps in a Lotus 49 via GPL, which failed to impress his temporary teammates. ;-)

Steve,

Um, yes, everything written abt. computer auto racing in Car & Driver up to
the story in the December issue (except for a twisted review of game
controllers) was penned by yers trulli (little pun there).  Most recently, I
wrote a review of N4, which I used as a transparent excuse to heap further
praise on GPL (neat trick, huh?).  I wrote the review of the original Papy
sim, Indy 500, back in '91.  And advised Csaba abt. the "Ring Trainer" when
he was gearing up for the enduro.  Maybe he's getting tired of my biased (if
well-meant) flackery for Papyrus, but for god's sake, they even left NASCAR
Heat out of the story last month...while including "Stunt GP."  Who are they
writing for?  Morons?  What's their median age?  13?  Sheesh....

If there is no advertising revenue involved, C&D will not give it a
glance! One must grease the skids to earn their unbiased reporting.

Steve,

So I do owe you thanks for getting me into this mess, then.  A few virtual beers heading your way!  And Csere owes you some thanks
too, for keeping him from being even slower than he was at that Ring enduro;  maybe you should've brainwashed him by making him
watch 1,000 laps of Greger doing 7:40-somethings... ;-)
