So I thought to myself, "I did pretty good at Indy against the AI...why
not try another oval?" I picked Bristol at random, skipped practice,
started at the back of the grid...and the AI never made it through the
first lap! I ran the rest alone and got my first headline, but so what?
No fun there, no sense of accomplishment. I kept the screenshot, but 2nd
at IMS means a whole lot more as I had the pack right behind me and
Clark pulling away in front, i.e. a race.

This is why I'm not concerned about cheating at GPLRank...it's just
meaningless. GPL seems to attract drivers and sportsmen (and
sportswomen) for whom the work involved in getting fast is the point.
Numbers are meaningless without the struggle to achieve them by sweat
and skill.

The ovals converted with Dave's Oval Converter don't "have any ai"
... They are made for mulitplayer only. The lp's are there so the
tracks are usable but the cars wont race...

I'd love to have some "real" ai for Talladega

Only tracks converted with the full version of the converter have a
good AI. Bristol is converted with the demo version, and doesn't have
a working AI. I expected that the full version would also convert the
track from the demo version with a good AI, I was a little bit
surprised and disappointed that that wasn't the case.

Yeah, I'm almost sure I converted it using the retail converter. I guess it's
the first time I've tried an AI race on an oval other than IMS. The AI seems
to work there just fine. Maybe I'll run the converter again, just to be sure.

Precisely. Seeing as the records are held in a standard text file, any
one of us could leapfrog above Greger, Wolfgang & co in 30 seconds.
Then what would we do? There are some games where cheating is almost
expected (look at how many games have cheat codes these days), but GPL
ain't one of them. I deperately want to get a negative handicap, but
just changine the "+" to a "-" in my sig would mean nothing.

Especially the sweat... I'm sure I'm not the only person who has to go
and change my shirt after a Ring session!

After most qualifying sessions the host usually asks something like," Anyone
have to take a pee break before we race?"

After a qualifying session at the ring the question is just as likely to be,
"Anyone have to go soak their head before we race?"

Now GPL may only be a game, but so is football. GPL is ALSO a legimate
sport. If you don't believe me try to take pole at the ring against a class
field.

Then go soak your head.

Well, it's the eternal paradox of the user expansion crowd. Do you want more
add ons, or do you want the existing tidied up a bit? Time is limited, can't
have both.

AI at Bristol would have come at the expense of Imola.

Still, I hope the time comes when people can go back over the tracks we
already have and polish them until they gleam like chrome in the sun.

Come to think of it, I wish Papy would do the same for GPL.

Yep :-) Nearly there now - a little bit more at Kyalami, Mexico, Monaco
and Zandvoort should do it. Ringtrainer has worked wonders (get it now,
folks, if you haven't already) - my improvement is almost entirely down
to that (plus a reasonable Lotus setup at last).
