F1 2001 Patched - WOW!

by Joe Marque » Sun, 25 Nov 2001 11:09:28

I really liked the game before the patch, now I'm in freakin' love ;-).
This is my new favorite racing sim.  What changed in the patch for me?

Force Feedback on the MOMO wheel is exceptional.  Just as good as GPL, might
be slightly better.  This is true 6 DOF force feedback.  It's not just grip
and inertia.  I feel the damn car bounce up and down when I hit undulating
road or inadvertently clip the curbing too hard and sort of jump the curb.
How they convey up and down movement through the wheel so well is beyond me.
You can feel the subtle change in grip when driving in light rain (haven't
done downpour yet).  I'm amazed.  I don't feel collisions but perhaps I need
to enable damage.

Smooth sailing with no GF3 related problems any longer.  I have graphics set
to FULL and resolution set to 1280x1024 32-bit and this game is flying.  80+
fps alone in test mode.  35 fps full field start of race and 45-60 racing.
The full detailed opponent cars are gorgeous.  The tracks are gorgeous.  Yes
I have a high end rig (AMD 1600+, 512 Ram, GF3 Ti 500), but I still didn't
expect this amazing performance.

The immersion of this racing experience puts me in that "zone".  The
realistic sound.  Stellar force feedback.  Very good AI that is thankfully
imperfect (I love coming around the chicane after the Monaco tunnel only to
find Montoya facing the wrong way after spinning). Spectacular graphics.
This is THE game for me.  Yes, I know I'm a bit over the top but this game
kicks ass.

Thanks to ISI for a treat that will spend a while on my hard drive (at least
until F1 2002).

I've read enough, time for downloading the patch and reinstalling F1
2001 :))

And how about that new engine backfire sound? Suitably crunchy, and yet it
doesn't sound like the gearbox falling apart for each downshift, like
GP3... :)

I use a GeForce 2 MX400 and a LWFF wheel (yes, the old red one). Before
patching, I ran with slightly old nVidia drivers, and had to turn off the
broadcast overlay, since it destroyed framerates. Now I'm using the 21.83
drivers and graphic problems are gone. I also had to update the LWFF
software to 4.11, since the old 3.something version also caused a framerate
collapse when turning on force feedback.

How did I forget to mention the backfire sound!  I think the file was there,
it just wasn't implemented before the patch.  The sound is now complete and
terrific.

I just can't get enough of this sim.  I was racing 50% at Monaco and fish
tailed a bit causing me to slam the damn wall and knock off my front
spoiler.  I'm sure this happened because I never drove so many laps with
tire wear and fuel usage on so I just sucked with a lighter car and bald
tires. ;-)  Best part was the FF after losing the front spoiler.  The car
felt lighter in the front end and understeer feel was excellent.  I knew
from the damn force feedback effects BEFORE turning that I would not have
the same grip.  This is just outstanding.

Don't you have a MOMO?  Make sure you set FF to -100% (not +100%).  I'm also
using high force instead of full since using full at idle was a bit strong
(too much vibration sitting still).  Enjoy.

Thanks, you also have a momo? Could you give me your advanced ff
settings and the settings you use in windows?

by Joe Marque » Tue, 27 Nov 2001 23:20:21

Yes I also have a MOMO and I'm happy to post my settings.  I'm using Pat
Dotson's advanced FF settings slightly tweaked (see them below).  I agree
with your thinking, the force feedback is great but it could be better with
the right tweaking.  I just don't want to tweak it right now, I'm having too
much fun racing. ;0)

In windows I have the following:

Overall Effects Strength 100%
Spring Effect Strength 100%
Damper Effect Strength 0%
Centering Spring DISABLED

In the LW Profiler I set the following axis properties:

Wheel and Pedals: 100% Sensitivity - 0% Dead Zone - 100% Range

In game I set the following axis properties:
Wheel Sensitivity to 50%/Dead Zone 0%
Brake Sensitivity to 50%/Dead Zone 2%
Gas Sensitivity to 50%/Dead Zone 2%

Here's my .plr advanced FF settings.  The only odd thing is I keep changing
FFB_Effects_Level to 5 (as instructed) and it goes back to 4 (the file is
not read only, I checked).

FFB_Device_Type=2     // Set to 2 if editing FFB parameters manually.

This happens every time you change FF through the menu. Don't go there when
you use custom settings! Only change the player file (which requires you
leave the game everytime you want to try a new setting :(

I have made a notepad file with the custom settings since they are lost so
easily I need to be able to copy them back.

Aha!! So that's probably the reason why I have problems trying out the
different settings, since everytime I tried some settings I went to
the joystick screen to see if the setting was still negative as it
should be..

I wanted to test Joe's momo settings tonight, but for some stupid
reason F1 2001 won't start on my pc anymore :(((
Posted that problem in a new thread.

F1 2001 Patched - WOW!

by jason » Tue, 04 Dec 2001 11:24:04

I have just purchased F1-2001 today and applied the patch from easports.com

Everything is great for me, I really like the audio but after patching I am
still not getting the backfire sounds while stuffing it into the chicanes.

I have the files in my sounds directory and they sound reasonably terrific
on their own in winamp.  Any suggestions?

I'm using a SBLive 5.1 Platinum running 6 channel analog on my h/k amp works
great for GP3 using GPxPatch but looks like F1-2001 skipped EAX.. :(  One of
my only complaints, having fun with this game.

see my pc setup if you like

Thanks for any info.
