CMR: a true sim?

by Pete » Fri, 23 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Having owned the game for almost 2 weeks the new patch has finally let me
use it....

I've seen a few posts on CMR so i thought i'd throw mine in for what it's
worth....

A lot of people have complained it's a bit too much like an arcade game,
from my 2 hours driving so far i'd have to disagree. Although its obviously
nowhere near GPL in terms of realism and setup it still requires you to
"drive" the car and make a few setup choices, it seems to respond pretty
much as you'd expect when you change the setup or change your style.....

You can plant your foot to the floor and just slide and bounce off
everything but you won't be very quick and your car will look like a metal
bucket that's gone down a long flight of stairs....

In novice mode it's fairly easy and i won the first rally i entered, anyone
with any sim experience can settle in to driving fast fairly quickly, to be
really competitive though is going to take practice, you really start to
save time when you start braking in the right places and using correct
lines round corners.

Whatever you think of it, for the time being it's the best rally game out
there.

I'm glad i drove in GPL first though, i got lots of experience of driving
off-road :o)

I revisted Europress's International Rally Championship yesterday for my son
(he likes it because the driving space is only slightly wider than the road so
if you're four years old it's the most rewarding driving game). I can tell you
that this thing doesn't hold a candle to CMR for driving model and physics
although it does let you design your own tracks and muck with the drivetrain
which is one setup I don't mind doing. Overall, though, CMR knocks holes into
IRC.
