When will a true bike sim come out?

by Destroy - Derek Stru » Sat, 10 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I've played all the motorcycle games. Not one has gotten very close to
be called a sim. Castrol Honda claims to be a accurate sim but how
they can claim that is beyond me. So many realism errors in that game
its not even funny. I had high hopes for that recent Superbike game
but it seems pretty bad too. Perhaps sim mode is very different but I
doubt it. Motoracer2, please. Redling Racer, ya right. Am I missing
any?

Just thought I'd vent a bit. Sorry.

I think it's too hard to do.
Good driving sims are easier since you control a car with your arms
and legs, but you control a bike with your whole body.
It's amazing to watch a guy like Doohan work a GP bike.
Equally amazing to watch Ricky Carmichael or Jeremy McGrath work a 125
or 250 MX bike, respectively.

I think we're going to be stuck with arcade racers with realistic
touches for a long time.
I'm actually OK with that, since I can afford real bikes that I can
race. An F1 or NASCAR ride is a little more difficult to come by. :)

Well, there is a game that simulates using your body to control the bike
- it is called Motocross Madness.  While it is not exactly a sim, it does
a superb job of compromising to make a arcade game feel more like a sim.
It's a blast to play, especially online.

I think what your looking for is Superbike World Championship by ***.
From the demo this seems like the first true bike sim and the demo is only
playable in arcade mode so simulation must be excellent. Its out soon in the
UK but I'm not sure about the US.

Based on the demo (thats all I have of course) that game has serious
handling problems and realism problems. It is arcade mode but unless
there are some MAJOR improvements I cant see the sim mode being
accurate at all. I'll keep an open mind however but I will be watching
newsgroup reviews of true bike owners/racers to see how the sim mode
stacks up.

I way vote for motocross madness.  The control feels goofy at first, but you
need to compensate for all sorts of stuff that makes sense, like if you're
landing on a slope you have to land already turning down the hill a bit or
else your tires wash out.  try the demo.  Way beyond the other demo's I've
tried of castrol, wsb, redline, etc.

Hey, and multiplayer on the zone is cool too.  passing isn't such a big deal
but you are racing with real people (mostly trying no to make mistakes, like
life).

I own MCM. :) While it is alot of fun its still not a sim. Its
definitely an arcade type game. It kinda trys to be a sim but is not a
sim. Some day a cycle sim will come. :)

Have you tried the just-released microsoft MOTOCROSS MADDNESS? I haven't tried
it myself, but if motocross is your thing, I've heard it's pretty
true-to-life...

Personally I don't think that a bike sim is ever going to be very realistic
until you can have handlebars that turn and tilt, as well as "pedals" for
braking and shifting. I wish some developer would have a talk with
Thrustmaster! : )
