Banshee - Directx7 problems

Sorry if this is old hat.  I did do a search and found some articles
here and elsewhere. Lots of differing experiences.  What I didn't find
was a definitive solution.  So, I'll try it once here:

I just noticed that my latest Directx games and demos, mostly
flight/driving sims, are crashing.  These include the TD6, Mig Alley,
Nascar rev demos, etc.  Perhaps since I installed DX7 (though my first
experiences with dx7 were okay).  Glide games work okay.  I've now tried
dx7a and loaded the latest 3dfx drivers (1.03.04) as well as trying
Guillemot's version of them (which I believe are identical).  The D3D
test in "dxdiag.exe" crashes my system.  I did the usual tricks,
removing all drivers before reloading, de-oc'ing my system (the Banshee
is at normal speed, I run my 300a at 450 no probs).

I might be willing to try uninstalling dx7/7a, but I know this is
supposed to be a hassle or even last-ditch resort.

Any help??
