BURNOUT DEMO - Won't run in Win95 (other questions...)

by John Courtn » Wed, 15 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Hi,
I  downloaded the burnout demo a couple of hours ago and I have a
couple of questions:

1:  When I try to run the demo (software version) in Win95 i get the
following error:

A Fatal Error Occured:
Problem Allocating Memory while reading file: SOUND\ENGSND.AP

My system: P120 16MB RAM, SB16 sound card, Cirius Logic graphics card,
no 3dfx card.

The demo runs just fine in MS-DOS mode.

Has anyone else noticed this problem with the demo/full version?

2:  I was a little disappointed I could not try my T2 with this demo,
it seems to only allow you to use the keyboard  After a few tries I
was finally able to get down the track without DQ-ing my self!  The
only problem is that I have not been able to do a burnout!  There
seems to be some steps I'am missing!

3:  I'am visually impaired, so my reaction times are aweful!  What
sort of reaction times are the rest of you getting? (my best so far is
.249! :) ).  I'll keep practicing!  This game could be a good way to
improve it!

Later,
John

John, the game unfortunately, is a dos based game! A 3dfx card
definitely improves the frame rate big time. Don't know about the demo but
the full version does allow any input device.
Reaction time takes practice, you must learn to use the the trans-brake
and delay box to optimize your leaves on the tree. Their are some bugs in
the
way the tree starts the clocks but you should be able to shave your
reaction times
down to .000 .010 consistantly. Barry Clay and I are running ing in the
4.4's at
330+ miles per hour range in the 68 Nova. HP isn't always king, but hooking
things up is!

Please use the following set-up for WIN 95 and the game should run.

Right click on your BURNOUT short-cut icon. Select PROPERTIES - Under memory
set every EMS to NONE, XMS and CONVENTION to AUTO, SET DPMI to 16384. Set
Initial Environment to 2048

Also under its "Properties" set:

 - Do not allow screensaver
 - Always Suspend in background
 - Usage: Full Screen
 - Mouse Exclusive

Make sure that you UNCHECK CLOSE ON EXIT.
Make sure that you UNCHECK SUGGEST DOS MODE IF NECESSARY.

DO NOT attemp to run the game form the AUTORUN.

Have a small 2 line CONFIG.SYS on your C root directory which WIN 95 reads
on start up.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
FILES=50
BUFFERS=35

If your problems still persis - trying configuring for NOSOUND and NOMIDI and
see is that solves your problem. Then we know that you have a sound card
conflict
and I can work to get that working.

If you have more than 16MB of RAM try setting the DPMI memory either to AUTO
or to the amount of installed RAM you have on your system.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.  I think I noticed the bug in the starting
lights.  The first time I ran burnout, there was a noticeable interval
between each of the three yellow lights before the green light.
However, when I exited/restarted burnout, all of the three yellow
lights flashed on at once, and have continued to do so. At least there
is an still interval between the all three yellow lights and the green
one!  BTW, I got my reaction time down to .011 after some practice
last night!  The only thing is getting it down to a consistent level!
My fastest speed in the 1934 ford is around 130.  However, the demo
doesn't allow you to change any setup options! :(  Getting down the
track in just the right way seems to make a big difference in speed.
Sometimes I'll run as low as 114 and other times as high as 128's or
129's, I can tell when I'am going really fast by the roar the motor
lets out about 1/2 to 3/4 way down the track!  I didn't think I would
like a drag racing game, but this is sort of fun! (it is not just
pressing the "go" button as one of my friends said!).

John, what you were seeing was the difference between a
competition tree and a pro tree. Comp tree's count down 1 yellow
at a time with .5 sec between each light till green. The pro tree lights
all 3 yellows at once with a .4 time till the green comes on. The reason
you are seeing a speed difference may have to do with staying in the
groove or the dead center of the track. The car definitely hooks harder
and goes faster if you keep it there.
The game is actually very ***ive and satisfying figuring out
what makes a car hook, go straight and mile per hour. But in the end
it gets frustrating looking for thousandths of a second.
