Monaco demo won't run

by Bert » Sun, 27 Sep 1998 04:00:00

After downloading the Monaco demo, I can't get it to run.

I get an error message saying that D3D can't be found.  My system is an
AMD K6-200 with an Orchid Righteous 3D (Voodoo 1) card.  My video
drivers are the latest offered by Orchid's website.

I get the feeling that the problem is that I don't have DirectX 6 on my
system.  (I have DirectX 5).

Does this make any sense?  If so, where do I get DirectX 6 drivers?

If this doesn't make sense, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you running 'MGPRS D6' or 'MGPRS V' ? With a Voodoo card it should
obviously be the latter. However the D6 in the D3D version probably means
that it needs DX6. This can be got from the MS site.

There are two binaries in the demo zip: use the one that contains
the "v" for voodoo. The other uses the Microsloth-sucks-big-time d3d
engine.

Hope this helps,

Uwe

Normally I would agree with you about D3D, but have you tried the MGP
version? I can't tell the difference between it and the Glide!

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried both binaries and neither runs on my system.

Any other thoughts?

Does F1RS or any other glide-based title run?
However, it isn't surprising that the direct3D-version doesn't work
with your system - AFAIK it actually needs DirectX6.

bye,
Daniel

Thanks for your reply.

F1RS GPL Demo, and all other 3dfx, Glide, D3D games that I have run
fine.

To clarify what's happening:  When I double click on the icon ending in
_v, I first get asked what language I want.  After clicking on English
(or any of the languages listed), I get a dialog box which says: "Please
insert Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation CD-ROM".  Clicking on OK
brings back the same dialog box.  Cancel kicks me back to the desktop.

I have even tried downloading euro.zip again, this time from a different
site, but I get the same results.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Thanks!

Did you unzip the file with the directions to use the stored
directories?   When you unzip the file, they need to be placed in their
proper directory hierarchy.
