GPL - sound question again....

by Rafe McAulif » Mon, 14 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I didn't get any responses to my original post below - does no one
know? Is anyone else having a similar difficulty? Just that it can
make being consistent at starts, and close driving, almost impossible
because of the difficulty in picking up the sounds. Help please!!!!

I'm currently using the sounds that Alison has listed on her site
(don't require carsound patch) but find that at the start of the race,
and when in heavy traffic, I can barely hear my own car's sounds,
either engine revs or tyre squealing, over the sound of the other
cars. If I reduce the number of sounds, this helps slightly, but I
want to be able to hear all the other cars as well. It's too damn hard
to drive when I can't hear what the car is doing.

Any suggestions or possible solutions to make my car volume louder? I
could always make the volume of the Lotus (my usual ride) louder, but
this would***up when I changed cars. There must be a better
solution - anyone know????

Using an SBlive btw.

TIA

yes it is difficult to hear your motor when others are around you, and
yes it does have an impact on your driving, but, that's how it is in
real life. If you want to change it, try taking a  custom .wav file
that's associated with the car you drive, use some audio software to
make it louder and put it in the folder of the car in question, no need
to insert it into the .dat file.  Then your going to have another
problem in that your skid sound will now be drowned out by your louder
engine, and the skid sound is more important to hear than the engine in
terms of driving feedback.

As long as you don't drive the Ferrari ;)

I've just done some testing with some other sound files, and I think
that it was just the Lotus in particular that was softer than the
rest. Even the default sounds were easier to follow and drive with,
but I liked the other ones. I'll do some wave editing to balance all
the car volumes evenly, as I think that was the main problem.
