Problem with ICR2

Problem with ICR2

by Tomas Kopnic » Sun, 26 May 1996 04:00:00

I own GUS and Indycar Racing 2. I have a problem using joystick in ICR2.
I run ICR in VGA mode and when the game finishes loading the following
screen appears (joystick calibration):

        x axis  5 ----------------- 700
                            ^  ^

        y axis  7 ----------------- 500
                        ^ ^

TWO arrows appear for each axis and both move along with the stick. However,
when I center the stick, the two arrows become one.
In SVGA mode, whe you are patient and wait for a moment, one arrow dissapears
leaving only one of them on the screen, which is (methinks) correct. Alas,
after a couple of seconds, there are again two arrows on the screen. If I
accept the calibration the cursor in menu behaves erraticaly, runs up or
down and can't be stopped, it can only be slowed down. (bad calibration)
It requires STRONG nerves for me to select the circuit I want to play.
Sometims I get really mad.

Then, in practice or race, the joystick works ok, I didn't encounter any
problems. When I return to menu, it (and me) gets mad again. It runs
through the menu and can't be centered. I've found that new calibration
helps in 10%, but after training or race when I return back to the menu,
the stick won't work again.
It is interesting that in SVGA mode the stick works some 70% of the time.
The same problem was in ICR1 and NASCAR racing-demo.
Please, HELP

This not a fix, but it may help.  I can't remember offhand the exact key
combination, but..  During your menu, press Shift/J or CTRL/J or maybe
just j.  This should stop the mad scrolling and you can use the keyboard
arrow keys for menu selection.

I had a GUS, too! And I liked the sound it produces. A few months ago
I threw it out of my PC, because of the trouble it caused when
calibrating joysticks.

I do more racing than listening to MIDI-files... 8^).

Sounds to me like you have noisey pots on your joystick.  Try a friends
out and see if it does the same thing.  You may need a new one.
