Europress-Network Q Rally, no serial link

Europress-Network Q Rally, no serial link

by Ron » Wed, 06 Nov 1996 04:00:00

After having played a demoversion of Network Q Rally that came with a
CD-ROM of the magazine PC Format I decided to buy this game. The same did
my brother and we were already enjoying the idea of racing against each
other via a serial link as was possible in the demoversion. Both we were
rather disappointed to discover that the full version lacks this option.

To be honest, the text on the box only mentions a networkmode via an IPX
network. But who looks at this text when you are in the shop. You just
expect to get at least what is in the demoversion.

After having sent an E-mail to Europress about this matter they responded
they had removed the serial link option in the full version because they
had quite a few problems with it. They didn't reply to my question if I can
expect a patch or an upgrade.

What I am interested in is if there are other people out there that bought
the full version and HAVE the option to play via a serial link and how this
is working? Or people that are as disappointed as me because their full
version also lacks this option.

I am disappointed also that there is no serial link. I have the
full version of the game also.

Oh well!!!!   Good game otherwise for a change of paste from INDY2
              and NASCAR, etc.

You know, it's probably worth the money to go to an old
second hand computer parts store or a swap meet and buy
an couple of old 8 bit network cards for $5 or $10.  A bit
of co-ax, a couple of T-pieces and the IPX drivers that
come with the card - solution for a few bucks.  (oh, and
terminators :)

For better performance, 16-bit cards are pretty cheap
new, especially if you get a single connector type rather
than the combo (RJ45/BNC etc).  These will definately
have IPX drivers with the card, and most are software
configurable for resource use.

If everyone you knew had a network card, imaging the
fun you could have with other games.  Remember,
the original Screamer didn't have serial link either.

Just an idea.

Europress-Network Q Rally, no serial link

I wrote an E-mail to Europress about the missing serial link option in the
full version, while it used to be in the demo version. They replied to me
that they had problems with the serial link, so they removed it from the
full version of the game. They should better remove the network option as
well. Last week I bought a 16 bit network card to play the game via an
IPX-network. Other games (Duke3D, Screamer 2, Quake) worked fine over the
new installed network , EXCEPT FOR NETWORK Q-RALLY. I tried to play against
one other person.

What happens is that after selecting who is the master and who is the
slave, which track you want to race, the kind of car etc., the countdown
before the start of the race begins. Then both players can start racing.
You can see eachothers cars. But after a few hundred meters the road just
stops being shown on the screen for the person who selected to be the
slave. It is impossible for him to drive any further. The master seems to
have no problem. He can still see the other car and the road. The problem
only occurs for the person who has the slave connection. We tried switching
the PC's for being master-slave, but the problems always occur for the one
being the slave.

If anyone has better experiences with playing this game over an
IPX-network, please let me know.

Thanks, Ron.

We have been running Duke, Quake etc over IPX network at home, ran Rally
recently, connected master and slave first time, ran a stage of the race
all ok, when we finshed and went back in again, it crashed, re-booted
both pcs worked again then crashed after exiting...seems like it has
some bugs...

Can email our setup if interested?
