GPL 1.2 & steering ration prob.

by Screami » Tue, 16 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Upon installation of the 1.2 patch for GPL,
my steering ratio has been decreased.
I honestly cannot make it around the Loews (sp)
hairpin anymore without hitting bales.

I am using:
Logitech Wingman FF
DX6
GPL 1.2 patched
Direct input
Full linear
USB connection
Steering ratio 20:1
Primary car: Eagle

This is noticeable at any low speed
corner...particularly the hairpins.

This occured immediately after the patch
and shows up off & on-line.
Tried core.ini settings:

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 0                             ; Enable low speed ratio
override

1 & 0 to no effect.

I've gone back & reviewed my own replays (before
the patch) difference is painfully obvious.

Any ideas or suggestions would be just super.

From the readme:
By default, GPL uses a speed-sensitive steering ratio.  At and above 60MPH, the
steering ratio specified by your car setup is used.  Below that speed, your the
steering ratio will be set to somewhere between 7:1 and the ratio defined by
your car setup.  GPL does this to make it possible to exit your pit stall when
pit road is crowded, and to make navigating hairpin turns easier.  You can
disable this feature by adding the following two lines to core.ini

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 0       ;

The first thing you might try is to deleat the [Hack] entry from your
Core.ini and save the file, so that the game returns to it's default speed
sensitive steering. Personally I prefer the hack in.  Second, a steering ratio
of 20:1 is the opposite of what your looking for. It means that you have to
turn your steering wheel 20 degrees to get 1 degree of steering at the tire.
You want to go the other way to quicken your steering. Try 12 to 16 degrees
depending on your wheel.

Can't thank you enuff sir...that was the trick. Set my
ratio to 17/18 to 1 depending & the car felt
like it used to.
Reason I ran 20:1 initially was to help with
the full linear setting. Sorta forgot about it
having that much impact in that direction.

It still begs the question however, did Papyrus
change something in 1.2 that a affects the
steering ratio or is it the lack of DirectX 7 w/1.2?
Or the Wingman drivers?
Further investigation required.

Anyway, I owe ya one Don, ya saved my bacon.

There were no changes in 1.2 that affected the steering
that I noticed.  The variables in the game are, the linearity
slider,  the steering ratio setting,  and the Hack entry in the
Core.ini file.  Outside of the game there's your particular
wheel, my ECC only turns a total of aprox 170 degrees. Then
there's software like CTFJ and the like,(maybe your Wingman software?)
that will let you set your controllers range independently of or in
addition to your game settings.
