NEW GEFORCE 3!! SAME OLD F1RC PROBLEMS!!!!

by chainbreake » Sat, 26 May 2001 08:22:50

Well, I'd hoped that a new GF3 card would induce F1RC to behave, but alas,
the same ugly problem exists.  The sim still locks when loading a track
unless I first delete the saves folder before starting it.  And it still
creates some peculiar system problems.

Oh, sorry about the shouting in the header, but I wanted to make sure my old
bud, Iain, didn't miss this--he's keeping a ledger of my F1RC posts, you
know.

I just talked to my dad who owns Ubi Soft. He's going to recall every copy
of F1RC because your system won't let your copy run.

Oh, are you keeping score, too?

Anyway, thanks, I appreciate it!

NEW GEFORCE 3!! SAME OLD F1RC PROBLEMS!!!!

by Jason » Sat, 26 May 2001 13:28:35

We have discovered a "stupid bug" in F1RC, and we wonder if this could
indeed be your problem.

It would seems as though UbiSoft have only allowed 12-byte memory buffers on
a number of "loadable parameters".

The fact that you have to delete the "save folder" to get it to run leads me
to believe that this may be your problem.

Here is the deal:

The filenames for:

Setups and driver names (that we have found so far), are limited to 12
characters (don't ask me why...). Meaning... if you atempt to load a
filename longer than 12 characters, you will get what is called a "buffer
overflow" and the game simply crashes.

I am unsure if this is your "exact" problem, but it seems like a logical
place to start. Check your setups/Profile Names/Etc. to see if any of them
exceed 12 characters (not including teh filename extension).

Might not be the problem, but thought I'd throw it out anyways.

Cheers,

Schumi

Brilliant Dave!  In contrast to what I was saying in an earlier thread, fun
is returning to ras after all!
Incidentally, I got an unprompted message from Stuart at Ubi UK to say that
'Ubi are working round the clock with FIA to get the patch (which was
finished weeks ago) released'.  I've asked him why this is happening and
what exactly the problem is, so we'll see.....

I just found out what the trouble is.....it seems that the patch will have
traction control, and it's been found that the form of tc used actually
works, as opposed to what the Formula 1 teams are currently trying to get
going. So they wont release the patch until the teams figure their
respective inventions out......y'know....to avoid looking like idiots.

No Iain.

There will be no patch. It will not suddenly appear someday soon. It was
never even made. Ubi Soft doesn't care about it's customers, and could
"learn a thing or two from Papy".

How do I know all this for sure?

Because I read it on r.a.s.

Also, Ubi is now saying that F1RC2 probably won't be available until the
start of next season, and that a few more patches for F1RC will be coming
after the intitial one to improve the game even further.

Don't believe it. R.a.s. knows all.

Can we say: "Papyrus put a fire under their butts after they patched
GPL [btw: a 3yr old sim!] so quickly??" huh?? huh?huh? :o)~

I'm (quite) sure there will be a patch for F1RC, but imho we're
waiting too long now allready for that (badly needed) patch.
I really enjoyed hotlapping with it, but it would be nice if I could
actually RACE with this thing :( Bring on the AI fix and a working
multiplayer! (I'm one of those crazy dudes who likes to have races
with more than 4 people).
Working FF would be nice too.

About Papy: they patch a 3-year old sim. Is it that hard to understand
that I/we're VERY pleased and surprised by this? How many companies
patch a 3-year old game??
