hi guy's-

i was wondering if anyone could help direct me to info on force
tranducers.While
reading about the virtual roadster it appears that putting one of these
under the seat will get the seat to vibrate with the engine decibels.
when i looked up force transducers on google i was not sure which type
to use or even read about. does
anyone have any ideas or first hand knowledge of how this might work?
I'm surely
not going to spend 3,500 dollars on the virtual roadster but thought
that adding this transducer thingy to my homemade***pit might increase
the already very high
immersion level of driving.thanks in advance!

I have a set of Aura Bass Shakers that I got from parts express. They add
some, but its not like that first 3D Accelerated game, or your first time
with a subwoofer. They were on clearance, and I don't know if they still
carry them. Another thing to look into might be the seat 'cushion' from
tactilefeedback.com (vrf.com). Although the last time I checked they
weren't accepting orders online.

What John said.

"Transducer" is just marketing potty-mouth for "voice coil."  "Bass Shaker",
same deal.  You can connect almost any voice coil to something yer sitting
on and catch a buzz.  The bigger the amp, the bigger the buzz.  I run my SB
Live! Line Out to a 400W stereo amp and thence to a DIY crossover, sending
the treble to a pair of satellite speakers and the bass to a subwoofer
mounted under a fiberglass racing seat.  Firing 30mm depleted-uranium rounds
from a A-10's Gatling gun will loosen yer fillings, and extended GPL
sessions cured a *** case of hemmorhoids.  Highly recommended.

thanks STEVE-

my info is coming from the "Virtual Roadster" website, and the one
thing that caught my eye was the frequency levels went much lower in the
transducer than a
subwoofer.does that make any sense to you or would you say that its marketing
hyperbole?anyway your idea seems like a better alternative since i have a stereo

sitting right next to my***pit but dont use because i have the LABTEC 5 piece
speaker set and a sblive as well. do you think i should attempt to hook it up
like yours,
and if so could you give me more detailed instructions or a place i can read
them?

thanks again

Here's a DIY article on tactile transducers.

I ripped the coil out of the cushion and bolted it to the bottom of my
*** chair.  Quite effective and it does not detract away from the chair
in any way.

It does work pretty good in my desk chair, but I understand your
problems with a tight car seat.  FWIW, you might consider the
possibility of mounting the Aura Interactor on the backside of the
seatback (of your Hyundai driver's seat, that is).  Or maybe INSIDE the
seatback, perhaps -- for $20, you could afford to rip the
plastic "backpack" covering off and try to implant the speaker
("transducer?") into the seatback itself (I've considered trying this
myself if I ever build a***pit using a real car seat).  Or UNDER the
seat, maybe.  Again, for $20, this thing is cheap enough for
experimental purposes, and it's a LOT cheaper than a transducer (and it
is a pretty good transducer itself, in fact).

Something to consider!

P.S.  Glad you enjoy my reviews -- I try to give the product a fair
shake without misleading other potential consumers.  Plus, I'm a
tightwad, so I hate wasting my hard-earned money on something that
really isn't worth the price or effort.

You did this with an Aura Interactor cusion, Sam?  If so, VERY cool!
I've been considering doing this myself, but I've been hesitant to
sacrifice my Interactor -- if it works well, though, it sounds like it
might be worth doing.

Here in Aus I grabbed two Aura Interactor Cushions at Jaycar for AU$30 each
about six months back. Very immersive for driving games and not bad in
Unreal Tournament too (although it stirs ya lunch up a bit :). They came
with a Y adapter so maybe its the Backpack unit that doesn't come with that.
Interestingly they were selling the transducer units and amps separately too
which suits those who want to bolt it to the chair.

I slipped the whole cushion unit into a gap between my chair cushion and
backing material (not a normal office chair) and the whole chair rumbles
brilliantly. A word of warning though - on a normal office chair the cushion
pushes you forward about 20cm which gives new meaning to "edge of your seat
***".

BTW it works equally well through a hi fi, video or TV - not just your sound
card.

Yep.  It was pretty easy to do.  I just needed to desolder the connection to
the driver and redo it once it was taken out of the housing.  I even
connected a coiled cord to it so if would not get tangled under the chair or
run over with the wheels.

how would that work with an actual car seat?
