OK, without a real clutch (using keypad 2 for clutch), how the heck do ya
get away from the starting line with any accuracy and speed? If I rev it and
pop the clutch, revs drop to near zero and then it starts to move slowly,
then maybe break loose and fishtail. It's a *** to actually get decent
grid position against the AI, only to have then rocket past at the start.

Unfortunately, the AI get their own, simplified physics model
(otherwise you'd need a Cray) which means they are untroubled by what
you are experiencing.

It's sorta like the old joke, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"
"Practice, my boy, practice!" <g>  I usually bring the revs up to
around 4k, dump the clutch, and modulate the throttle so the forward
speed intersects the wheel speed within a second or two.  I've not
seen the benefit of dumping the clutch at redline, or I'm simply
inexperienced.

Go to Monza--off line-- and use those nice, long straights to practice
standing starts.  Over, and over, and over...

I rev the engine up to about 1-2K below redline...when green drops, dump the
clutch and add a little more gas (it will redline the motor...don't worry,
it is just for a very short time)...you need to get the tires spinning...now
use the spinning tires as your clutch instead of a real clutch...as the car
gets moving, let out some gas so you aren't redlining anymore and are
running about 1-2k below redline, still spinning the tires...you will know
when the tires begin to really grab because the revs drop down (about 4-5
seconds after you get moving) about 1K or so...once the revs drop from the
tires catching (less tire squeal and revs drop a bit) floor the gas and grab
second a short time later.  It all happens real fast but basically, try to
spin the tires to keep the revs up near the redline throughout the start so
you never lose power.  If you would like, I can send you a replay of one of

be lifting off the gas to keep from hitting people once you get this method
down right, it will rocket you.

Well there are 2 points in your answer...

1. the AI cars have warm tires AT THE START OF THE RACE, yes I know they
cheat, but it's like that, no wheelspin for them.

2. Knowing this the best I have managed is the following, this is using the
lotus so it might be different in the RPM but not too much unless you use
the ferrari then you can add 1500 to all numbers.

Be on 1st gear, with clutch engaged at 7000 rpm, when the flag moves, BEFORE
releasing the clutch make a blip with the throttle, if you do it right when
you are starting to move in 1st you are just at the limit of wheelspin but
going...the revs will go down to 5000 or so and when you get back to 7000
you will start to have wheelspin because of the cold tires, the shift 2nd,
very early, you will lose a bit of momentum compared to the others but not
too much.

If the track you are racing on is one where you never use 1st then in the
settings make your 1st longer that what you would do, so you don't have all
that wheelspin.

Good luck

Do what you're already doing, but as you drop the clutch floor the throttle
(almost) and then moderate it to control your wheelspin. Practice this at Monza
in a Testing session.

Oh hell, I guess I'll put in my 2 cents.  I drive the Ferrari, so this is what
I do.  Engage first gear while at idle (to prevent roll out) bring the rpms up
to about 10:00 o'clock on the dial, dump the clutch and floor it.  Immediately
ease out, controlling the tire spin.  Just as the tires grab (when you can just
feel the car wanting to pivot hard) short shift into second and keep er'
straight. At the start I never look at the tach, I just listen and try to feel
the car.
And again, just my 2 cents, but I'd rather lose a postion and keep going in a
straight line than pass three guys, the car grabs and hooks and suddenly the
cursing begins, followed by the very well worn and weary "Sorry."

I lay it flat until the rear end is just about to slip then go 50% on the
throttle and keep putting it on gradually... don't go to 2nd until you
really need it!!

I use to do the exact same start Mike.. It helped me alot to stay up with
many of the hotshoes when GPL first came out a 100yrs ago...lol
