Almost Pat, dual axis is combined throttle and brake hooked on the game port
connector. For separate gas and brake you need 3 axis minimum or you can even
have 4 axis (for a clutch in GPL / GP2). There's many configuration that could
be used for separate throttle/brake.
wheel on X axis port A
Gas on Y axis port A
brake on X (or Y) axis port B
or
wheel on X axis port A
brake on Y axis port A
gas on X (or Y) axis port B
or better :
Wheel on X axis port A
Clutch on Y axis port A
Gas on X axis port B
Brake on Y axis port B
So you can effectivally throttle and brake at the same time.
Dual axis (X and Y on port A) can't do that since both potentiometer are mount
in series.
Main advantage is true TRAIL BRAKING, and also correcting the car trajectory
at apex while reacelerating sooner, you can use the brake to prevent excessive
wheelspin.
I've made a project called "blackbox" on my website, it's a 2 to 4 axis
switching controller (final: at the press of a button, you can switch). It's
very handy with certain game that doesn't like 3 or 4 axis, so you can switch to
the "normal"
dual axis, and have broad type controller.

All 8 pages explaining this "blackbox" project could be used for other purpose
since i've explained all the uses of each pin for gameport connectors.
Good luck
