N4 -- Sidewinder Precison Wheel Pulls Left!

by mike_webs.. » Tue, 27 Mar 2001 08:15:13

No matter what track I'm on, or what basic setup I use, my car pulls
left.  I have to turn right to keep the car straight.  I've tried
several variations of calibration, including manual adjustments in the
N4 options panel, but nothing seems to help much.  When I test using
the SW software, it pull left there too.

I can't find a fix in the N4 or SW manuals or the
microsoft.com/sidewinder/ site.

Any suggestions?

it is SUPPOSED to pull left...your car is designed
to make speed in the corners...the tracks, even on the
straights, are banked(tilted) so combine the banking with a setup that is
designed to turn left and YES!  your car will pull left...That is
real...that is how it should be...try a road course and your pull will
disappear due to the setup that doesn't need to constantly turn a car left.
Many folks have complained about that feature..the easiest cure for folks
who just can't get used to the reality of N4 is reboot N3.

or you can hold wheel at 11oclock and hit calibrate then turn wheel left
from 11oclock and back right all the way and hit ok.the pull will now be
gone on all but road courses

Real Winston cup cars pull to the left, too.  Thats why the sim does it.
There's nothing wrong with your calibration.

Some people hate it, some people accept it in the name of realism.  Your
choice.

<snipped bit>   it is SUPPOSED to pull left...

Still a bit more real-life info on this one from an open-wheel perspective;
Scott Goodyear on his IRL car's behavior at Disney -

"You are physically holding the car straight on the straightaway - if you
took you hands off the wheel it would turn left and go down to the infield.
The faster you go, the more downforce the car makes and the more and more
effort it takes to keep it going straight. It is just about at its maximum
load just as you are ready to turn into the turn."

The fix is in the options screen. Select "arcade" mode.

Not so fast there Dave...

Even some long-time Sim Racers have, and do, complain about this.

Having an annoyance for the sake of realism doesn't always transpire to a
Simulation well.

The folks at MGI listened, and gave us a trim tab to offset it.  Papyrus
needs to do the same.

You should also remember that not everyone uses the same controller.  Those
with FF wheels do not notice it as much because when FF is enabled, the
return-to-center spring simulation is generally disabled and wheel
positioning is controlled by the FF effects.

Those without FF wheels, or those with FF wheels that don't like to use FF
in some games (I don't like it in Nascar games, but love it in GPL and other
road course games) are seriously affected by this.

The stronger the return-to-center characteristics of the wheel, the worse it
will be.

The MS SideWinder Non-FF is one of the worse.  It has a very, very
discernable return-to-center spring and a rather obtrusive notch at dead
center.

Before making comments like "Go back to N3", remember that not everyone is
using the same equipment, and Papy needs to put some options in place to
help everyone enjoy N4.

I tried this.  Never could get it to work reliably.

N4 -- Sidewinder Precison Wheel Pulls Left!

by Dave Henri » Mon, 02 Apr 2001 14:19:27

we just spent a couple of hours racing with about 6 - 7 guys  and I caused
one accident.  It was because of the pull...at Pocono, we were dragging down
the
front straight and as he pulled ahead I, for some durn reason, let the car
drift
down...(I wonder if he stole my air?) but the end result was the 'pull' put
my front fender
into his rear fender and he got spun...but that to me is why the pull should
be left like it
is...I have to learn to control this beast in all situations.  And if I turn
off the pull I'm not learning.
Unfortunately, that logic doesn't take into consideration the problems
many users are having with their controllers...perhaps a tab setting could
be beneficial...

N4 -- Sidewinder Precison Wheel Pulls Left!

by Mike Webst » Wed, 11 Apr 2001 08:15:19

Okay ... I didn't make myself clear.  When I release the wheel to
straight up 12:00, my car is huntin' for an RV in the infield to smash
into.  I doubt that the WC cars take left that hard, so I don't agree
with the assesment about realism.

At any rate, I think I found the solution to the problem in my SW
control panel.  If I set the wheel to NFS III defaults, there is much
less of a pull.  It's still there, but not near as bad.

Thanks!
