Interesting email...

"You are receiving this email because of your passion for motorsports. We were very
glad to count you among the thousands of racers and enthusiasts who joined iRacing
during our first six months of public operation, and wed really like you to come
back and see how the simulation and service have evolved since your membership
expired. To help make that easier, we have a special offer for you:

Renew your membership by 3/27/2009 and get 3 months for only $25!"

Although after four months away I really don't miss iRacing any more, I shall
probably sign up and take a look at the new style practice servers. Anyone else
who's been away for a while may be getting a similar offer soon. It may put a
significant blip in the user stats for a while.

Of course, on reflection, you could argue that this is actually $5 more than you
need to spend in order to find out if your opinion of the iRacing environment has
changed.

I too received that email, however the new feature "abolition of the
cruel penalty system and intensive *** of those who thought it
up" is prominently absent from the list. ;-)

I was tempted, but only for a second. The open praccy servers sound
promising, but unless they come up with a way for leagues to run on
their own time, rules and points systems, I'll stick with rF (those v2
screenies sure look lovely), thank you.

All the best,

Uwe

:-)

It's the only change of any note (for non-believers anyway) in recent builds.

I haven't seen any talk about v2... though that may be because I haven't looked.

there's a short interview in one of the recent SRT shows and
virtualr.net had some screenshots that were confirmed to be from rF 2,
featuring a 60s-style Spa track.

I doubt it. A dozen people (even a few hundred) re-newing won't keep
them from tanking (dunno if they're in any danger of doing just that,
my guess is JH has a few million left in his account) at their burn
rate, even if the latter has become a bit less since they went open.

Cheers,

Uwe

Agreed. Though it is perhaps interesting that the offer runs out just before the
end of the second quarter of the tax year. There may be a business plan they're
trying to stick to.

Or could be that they don't have a "critical mass" in terms of enough
drivers to make the system work.  If there aren't enough drivers then
things like splitting drivers on to servers according to skill level,
the rating system, and a few other things don't work quite as well.  Or
maybe they just want to see what happens if someone comes back after an
extended absence (e.g. how quickly does their rating stabilize).   Or
maybe they want to see if cost was the only reason you left. ;-) Lot's
of possible reasons, only they know why.

Well, that's always been true and still is unless something's changed radically
recently. It was the main reason I backed away... not enough drivers of my skill
level at the times I can race.

As you say though, only they know for sure. But it's not hard to make some pretty
educated guesses. That's even more fun than iRacing itself. :->

Lowering their rates to $10.00 per month would get a lot more new
subscribers. Speaking for myself, charging over $17.00 per month is beyond
my acceptable threshold for an online game. There is no online game that I
know of that charges such a high rate.

Why don't you just buy Race07+GTR Evo+ STCC and Arca and you have all the
online racing you want for one set fee with no monthly bill.

I accept it's beyond your threshold and that's fine, but regaring your
last sentence: How many of them are non-fiction?

I don't know how creating a character, weapon, a new ship in EVE
Online, etc, could be compared to a car which takes probably a month
to model and a 2-3 month period to define and refine physics for.
There's no research trip, no scan trip, no hotel fees, no extensive
modelling time (it isn't real, you can make it whatever shape you
want), no extensive physics work... Plus, the much longer time it
takes to create a non-fiction item, someone has to be paid during that
time difference. A track, even one like Bristol, can take months of
flat out work for one person, now imagine a track that isn't 0.533 in
length...

Car racing is a one trick pony. Never played Eve online but I have read
it is very deep and would probably keep me entertained for a lot longer
than  a car racing sim.
