Note: I'm a huge fan of NFS1, I still drive it occasionally after all these
years and have been sorely dissapointed with each new version of Need For Speed
since (before NFS HS).
For the most part I think NFS High Stakes is pretty fun and definitely the
most fun one since the original NFS1, EA looks like it is heading in the
right direction finally.
The controls I didn't find too bad, I was able to tweak them using the
options menu to remove the deadzone and this definitely helped, we're
not talking great responsive controls like in GPL, but High Stakes has
a much better feel than NFS2 or 3.
I'm enjoying the career play and agree with you that the prizes should be
a bit higher, it's boring to have to repeat a tournament you've already
won just to get enough money to enter the next highest tournament. The
cars should also go up in re-sale value once you've spent money to upgrade
them. Overall the money seems to be in short supply in the career mode.
I totally agree with you on the stupidity of the "circuit" tracks, I can't
believe that after all the feedback we've given EA on previous versions
plus taking their NFS fan polls plus sending them feedback on their website
they still haven't understood that the "stage" tracks would make the racing
feel much more real than doing laps on some circuit.
Another thing I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be enough traffic
on the circuits even when you turn the traffic on. Traffic was what made
NFS1 so awesome, nothing beats the adrenaline rush of racing the AI car
while weaving in and out of traffic trying to lose a chasing cop. In NFS HS
the AI traffic cars seem to be few and far between and not enough to make
it very challenging.
I do have to give EA kudos for good Police AI though, it is especially
great that the cops also pursue the AI racers as well as you (This was one
of my complaints of NFS1 that the cop would only ticket you and not the AI,
good to see that they listened to some of our feedback there)
Also a good point is that the choice of vehicles is great. A much more varied
and realistic choice of vehicles than in the recent NFS releases which had
only very *** supercars that even if you lived in Europe you had probably
never seen. I was very happy to see that the Porsche is back!! My favorite
car from NFS1, thanks EA you've made Porschephiles everywhere happy by
including the 911 Turbo.
Overall I think NFS HS is a fun arcade racer, the physics still aren't up
to par with NFS1 but they feel better than NFS2 or 3, definitely a very fun
game with terrific eyecandy and a worthy successor to NFS1. I hope NFS5 goes
even further toward what made NFS1 so great, give us long *fast* realistic
looking stages instead of overly twisty circuit tracks, and make the physics
even more realistic.
I'm looking forward to trying the online racing on www.earacing.com if and
when EA finally has it ready to go. Hoping that we will be able to race online
through traffic with cops chasing, that would be a blast. Maybe I'll run into
you there.

Thx!
Same here, I still rate it as probably the best arcade racer of all
time.
I agree but that's a kind of damning with faint praise isn't it? ;-)
Man, I still remember how pissed I was when NFS2 was released.
That's true. But I also think traffic is an utterly pointless feature
unless you have both A) non-circuit tracks, and b) a 3D-physics
collision model as in NFS 1.
It seems many reviewers noted the absence of non-circuit tracks, so
maybe they'll take notice. Then again if NFS HS is successful, maybe
they won't.
I'll see you there!

I like NFS4 too, got it for my birthday -- but what are you on, dude? It
drives exactly the same as NFS3. It's the same engine. It's basically an
expansion pack for NFS3...

You click the button that said "Deadzone" perhaps? {G}
Maybe it did and I just don't remember, I only played NFS3 for a few days
before returning it due to the poor controls and lack of Dashboard view on
my Voodoo2 8meg card, perhaps I overlooked all the Control Options
due to being pissed off about the view, then again maybe I *am* on
something :-)

No, it's considerably more responsive. This becomes quite apparent
when you race on the old NFS3 tracks. Because they aren't artificially
narrow and twisty like the new tracks, it is VERY easy to compete on
them. The AI drivers don't have a chance.
