N4 and Multiple Controllers

by BRH » Thu, 27 Dec 2001 02:17:15

I posted some questions about this a few months back, and could not get
a solution to my problem.  I'm hoping that perhaps Santa brought some of
you some new controllers, making your system similar to mine, and that
you've gotten it to work with N4:

I have an LWFF wheel with TSW peds and and an Act-Labs USB shifter.
This set-up works fine with GPL (which I primarily bought the shifter
for), but it doesn't work with N4.  Here's my set-up:

LWFF on ID#1 (using serial port)
USB Shifter on ID#2 (using USB port) - gotta be on this ID for it to
work with GPL AFAIK.
TSW Peds on ID#3 - split axis - (using gameport)

In N4, using the non-optimized driver, I can't get my brake pedal to be
recognized (Throttle is recognized, though).  Using the optimized
driver, the LWFF is not recognized.  (NOTE: I'm not running N4 through
the Logitech Profiler).  This happens whether the USB shifter software
is activated or not.

As I said, this set-up works fine with GPL, and I have no problems with
any other sim (although I have to use the LWFF paddle shifters with
them.)

So, has anyone with a similar system (3 controllers) gotten N4 to
recognize all 3 controllers properly?

Thanks!

I think the problem may be with the fact that the control display page in N4
is not very umm.. easy to read in a way.

I had the same problem, then I saw the   => arrow down in the bottom right
of the screen.  When you are calibrating your controllers in N4, you can hit
the arrow and go to the next screen which then shows the next 4 controller
axis

I am using a TM Pro Digital 2 Wheel with the Act-Labs Pedals.  I could only
calibrate the brake on the first page, my throttle was on the second page of
the controller config.

Check it out and see if that fixes the problem

I have a very similar problem but with the LWFF, Act Labs 3 pedal
setup, and the GPL shifter.

I have to unplug the shifter to get N4 to recognize anything on the
pedals except the brake. The brake axis works whether or not the
shifter is plugged in.

Not a question of going to the last page on the calibration screen, I
see 12 possible axis, but most are unresponsive. Really hoping to get
this working.

Thanks for the suggestion, Cliff.  However, I did notice that second calibration
screen, and switched to it, so that is not the problem.  I should have mentioned
that in my original post - Sorry.

Jim,

It sound like you have the exact same problem as me.  8-(       I'd be
curious to know what ID each of your controllers is on.

It's strange how a particular controller set-up works fine with one
Sierra/Papy product (GPL), but not with another (N4).   ....And it kind of
miffs me that the Act Labs website specifically states that the shifter
works with N4.  At this point, I don't care whether I can get the actual
shifter working with N4 or not (I'd use the LWFF paddle shifters instead)--
I just don't want to always swap controller ID's, and unplug and re-plug the
shifter all the time.

If you hear of a solution, let me know.  I'll do the same with you.

Bert

N4 and Multiple Controllers

Here's what I got from ACT...

Hi James,

This is a recognized compatibility issue between the LWFF, our
Pedal/Shifter combo, and Nascar 4.  This only appears to affect N4,
and N2002 when using a Logi wheel.
We are in contact with Papyrus to try and resolve this, but for the
time being, it is considered an incompatibility.  If you like, we can
take your pedals or shifter back for a refund.

Hi guys.

This continues to frustrate me, and NASCAR 2002 didn't solve it.

Let me try just posing this question:

Have you tested N4 or N2002 with the USB performance pedals, the GPL
shifter, and any other wheel (preferably a LWFF - the original)?

BTW, this is a problem regardless of other USB devices, or the
controller
ID
order.

Thanks!

I use the USB performance Pedals w/ Nascar 2002 and N4. Works fine.
Using the Force RS wheel and the Shifter, as well.  Using Unified Drivers,
everything works.
Had to change to a single axis as the other sims I drive can't support
split.

Hi Gavel,

Sorry, the start of that thread is probably MIA on most news servers,
the issue is the pedals work fine with the wheel (a Logi WFF
(original)), and the shifter works fine with the wheel, but when you
try to use both the pedals and the shifter, you lose 2 of the pedal
axis. Definite problem with the LWFF, the GPL Shifter, and performance
pedals in N4 or N2002.

Apparently just this combo has the problem

lucky me ;-)

I just got this fixed last night, Oh btw its not just Logitech there are
many people complaining on the Act-Labs forum with Act labs wheel,
performance pedals and GPL shifter with the exact same problem.  The problem
seems to be the Logitech Wingman profiler software.  I did a clean install
yesterday of XP on a seperate hard drive.  Plugged in the componnets, First
Logitech wheel, Performance pedals, then the GPL shifter and got them to
work in N2002.  DO NOT install the Logitech software.  XP sees the Logitech
wheel and loads it own driver.  The problem is when I went back to my old
hard drive that did not work, unistalled the logitech software, resinstalled
WinXP and it is still broken.  Looks like there is a registry setting or
some system file that screws this up, A clean format of the hard drive and a
complete reinstall from scratch without Wingman is the only fix.  I don't
know if ths will work in win98 but worth a try if anyone has an extra hard
drive to try it out.

Why not just deltree c:\windows, then re-install?  Why re-format the whole damn
drive?
