Multiple Controllers and Windows XP, a warning

Multiple Controllers and Windows XP, a warning

by Phil Le » Sun, 28 Oct 2001 18:55:46

I installed Windows XP on Thursday, mainly because I need to know how to use
it for my job, but I was hopeful that it would become my main operating
system.  Fortunately as it turns out, I installed it as a dual boot system
leaving my Windows ME installation intact.

Microsoft have made an amazing omission from XP.  In the Game Controllers
applet you can no longer assign a controller ID to a particular controller.
There is an option to set a controller to be the primary one but this
apparently only works when using all USB controllers.  If you have a
gameport and a USB controller, the gameport controller is always controller
1.

This means that I can't use my racing setup in XP.  I need to have my USB
Act Labs Force RS as controller 1 and my gameport BRD F1 Sim pedals as
controller 2 so that the RS Shifter works correctly in GPL.  I can't do
this, so I have to boot into Windows ME to race.

If anyone knows a solution to this problem I would be very grateful.

Apart from this major problem from my point of view, XP seems to be an
excellent OS.

Cheers

Surely XP still uses a registry setting for this.
I'm not sure how difficult it is, but couldn't one modify the registry
settings for the controller ID's manually?

XP does use a registry but I couldn't find any reference the the controller
ID when I had a dig around in it.  If you or anyone have any pointers on
where I should look they'd be gratefully received.

Those look like interesting products.  I'll look into alternative solutions
for the time being but may well get one of those.  Thanks.

MS keeps saying how great their OS's are for *** yet in each version
they seem to always ignore controller configurability and options. Wait
for the SE version of XP, perhaps they'll put it in there but I wouldn't
hold my breath.

This problem has been brought over from win2k. I have researched everything
about this problem and have never found a solution. All I use is USB
controllers and I still can't select the ID. I have to just plug and play
the controller I want to use. Get used to it, MS won't be fixing this
anytime soon.
