GPL - new to me.

by Karaya On » Sat, 06 Jan 2001 03:00:20

I just got GPL in the mail - $15.00  - and bought it expressly to play
on-line. I have a few questions already.

I'm running it on a P3-700, 64mg GeForce 2, 256K Ram, SB Live, LWFF, cable

Is there anyway to push up the resolution past 640X480?

The graphics look software rendered, not smooth. Is this correct?

What is a good site for set-ups?

Where do I find an on-line race? Can anyone play?

Are they any recommended patches? I checked with Sierra, and it said that my
game was up to date.

Finally - any advice beside lots of practice? :^)) I play SCGT and F12CS but
really want to find an on-line league that runs smoother than those games.

Thanks for all advice and help!

With a GeForce, you need the Direct3D rasterizer.  You can get it
(along with the v1.2 update to the game itself - which you'll need
to play online) at http://www.papy.com/gpl/download.html

Depends on your notion of "correct" :-)  The only supported 3D cards
with an "out-of-the-box" GPL are 3Dfx and Rendition.

Another site you should drop by:

http://www.gplea.org/  - New car shapes and tracks

But you'll get most of the information from Alison Hine's site,
the address of which you got in another message in this thread.

Have fun and good luck !
Richard.

Nice setup, should run well when it's all patched up (see other replies).

Covered in other replies.

Should improve after applying D3D patch... keep in mind the game's two years
old though.

I'm a firm believer in making your own setups, so have a look at Richard
Nunnini's site. He explains how to make them.

http://website.lineone.net/~richardn/index.html

http://www.vroc.net

Download the WinVROC client and you're set. It's really easy. Most races are
open to all, but you should practise a little first... people will not warm
to you if you're not in control of your car. Practise for consistency,
rather than outright speed and you'll be able to go online sooner.

Covered by others.

Well, you're in for shock, but also on the verge of a voyage of discovery.
Enjoy the experience.

I'll repeat a message I have sent previously:

The first thing you should do is download version 1.2.0.1 of GPL.  This
version includes force feedback.  You can find it here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

If you have a non-3dfx graphics card you have you may also want to download
the D3D patch whilst your there and the GPL discofix would be useful if you
plan to race online.

If you have a force feedback wheel add the following to the file core.ini
which is in the gpl directory to enable force feedback:

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1                ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_latency = 0.02        ; force feedback latency (secs)
force_feedback_damping = 5.0       ; force feedback damping coefficient
max_steering_torque = 250.000000        ; steering torque in N*in giving max
device force

The above are the settings I use with an LWFF.  Opinions differ on the best
settings.  Fiddle around until you find one that suits.

Some useful sites for you to look at are:

For a general overview go here: http://www.racesimcentral.net/

For the latest car and track add-ons including the sublime Solitude go to
the GPLEA here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

For the highest quality add-on dashes go to the GPL Spares Factory here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

For other tracks including Road Atlanta, Imola, Brands Hatch and the O-Ring
visit the US Pits here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Once you have driven a lap at each track get yourself a ranking here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

When you want to race on-line go here and download WinVROC:

www.vroc.net

If you want to race on-line in a low pressure environment I also suggest you
check out the VROC-F2 club.  We race online in the F2 cars (advanced
trainers).  Racing is excellent and we are very newbie friendly.  You can
find us here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Tim Wheatley runs a Legends based site including an extensive forum here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/***.com/index.html

And finally some other sites of interest include:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/~hansvd/links.html
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

I hope that's enough to be going on with.

Cheers

Phil

Hell yeah, you should be 1024x768 or more! You can chane it from the options
menu, if not did you install it for hardware? You ahve the option of that,
software or endition card when installing, maybe that's the problem.

Not really, see above.

 > What is a good site for set-ups?
www.bhmotorsports.com
www.perc-ferme.de (a hotlap site but also with setups, don't use the 1st-5th
setups without editing, they are difficult to use.)

Yes, and a cable modem is perfect! go to www.vroc.com or www.vroc.net (I'm
not sure which it is) and it's all expained.

The auto checker doesn't work with GPL for soem reason. Go to the Sierra
website and look for patch 1.2, for improvements and Force Feedback.

Nope, just lots of practice :-)
Don't try to be very fast, to learn to brake smoothly and over a good
distance and accelerate smoothly.
Or try racing the trainers before the GP cars as you will progress to the
faster cars easier.
Just practice staying on the track first, forget lines and going fast! Once
you can stay on the track consistently, practice lines, then your braking
and accelerating. This is something to span weeks or months with GPL, not
afternoon to evening.
Don't judge yourself against the best hotlaps on the web, they are too fast
for most by a good few seconds!
I know the fastest guys use the Lotus too but I don't advise starting with
it at all.
The BRM's, Brabham's, Murasma's have some weight in them making them easier
to control. The Ferrari is good too for a bit of power and stability, the
Eagle is great too, lots of power yet very very stable.
The Lotus has tons of power but so little weight that it;s hard to control
until you are pretty good.

<SNIPPED a bunch of very useful stuff>

Phil, your post should be published somewhere as an FAQ for GPL newbies.
When GPL hits the cover of that German magazine next month, we're going to
see a lot of questions like this.

All those links are available from Eagle Woman's site, like I said if it's
not linked from there (or maybe a couple of links from there), it's not
worth knowing.  Read everything on her page twice before venturing online.

I know it's already been said, but with a GeForce 2 you need the D3D patch
from Papyrus home page (Richard posted the link in his message above), then
you'll get vastly improved frame rates and graphics, even running in high
res's (1024*768 or higher).  No one with a GF2 should be running GPL in
software mode.  Follow the instructions with the D3D patch to the letter.
There are recommended settings for a GeForce in the d3dreadme.txt file,
which also give the best results on a GF2.

We really need a FAQ for this!
