Eau Rouge just isn't fair. If you are anything like me, the
distribution of the times you have traveled corners
drops from corner to corner until you get to Eau Rouge
at speed, which is probably only 10% of the times I've taken
Eau Rouge on warmup ;)

Strangely, the number of times I've run Stavelot
is much less than the number of times I've run the
first half of Masta ;)

I didn't look at the replay, but just want to say that
just from geometry, the difference in speed through a corner and
exit speed you can gain through using just a few feet more of track
is much greater for turns less than 90 degrees than it is for
larger turns. (The classical racing line can be MUCH larger
radius than the inner or outer radius in this kind of turn.)

Or in engineering-eese, ;)
if you plot delta velocity per extra foot used
you get much more for the shallower turns.
Or, fixing a foot of line error in a turn
adds more speed through a shallow corner than
it will in a tight one.

Knowing this must be why I tend to go off the outside edge of
shallow turns so much trying for every mph.
This esoterica is only of interest to drivers that don't use
the proper line, like me ;)

Lap at Spa

I was goofing off tonight, trying to find stuff to keep me busy, fiddling
with one game or another. Finally decided to clean up the 'office' a bit.
Moved a file cabinet to get at some papers loaded up with passwords for
message boards and emails and online game services. There was a small door
back there. Opened it of course. Was very dark and dank.
Crawled inside (had to, otherwise there wouldn't be a movi... errr post) to
take a look. Started sliding, slipping, down, further and faster till
whooooosh...

There I was, in Eldred Picketts head!!!!!!!!! It was amazing! The most
amazing thing I had ever experienced! I was BEING Eldred Pickett!!

He was driving a '67 F1 car around Spa. What a sense of speed, what a rush!
Watching him shifting and drifting with such precision and poise through
those terrifying corners. Taking that hunk of metal buy the scruff of the
neck and taming it, making it jump gracefully thro hoops for him.

Alas, it was over all too soon. 3 mins and 24 secs after I first 'joined'
him, BAM, I was dropped out of Eldred head and onto the side of the New
Jersey turnpike. :(

I cannot wait to get back to that door. I cannot wait to get back in
Eldred's head.

Does anyone know the way from NJ to Southern Ontario, Canada???????????

Exactly, looking at the merged replay Eldred passes me just before the
corner, but my line alllows a higher apex speed. I also get on the gas
sooner. Yet, it's only good enough to get back on his gearbox as he uses the
Eagle to rocket down the hill.

I didn't, did I?? <checks>....

Yup, I did. Mixed up the two corner names. How embarrassing (for a
Belgian)!!! ;-))

I think this one is keeping me from entering the sub-3m20s laps (PB of
3m20.10s at Spa), but as you say there's no real landmarks and the line I
took to do the 3m20 is already of the none-repeatable kind, cutting the
corner severely. One of the crucial corners at Spa.

Yes, I have this feeling Eldred is very close to what the French call "le
declick". I.e. pretty soon things will start falling into place.

Hehe, that film was great, wasn't it? :-)

And funnily written this was too ("such precision and poise")! :-)))

<snip>

Allthough I didn't have the same experience you had, while I watched
Eldred's replay yesterday, I had the same feeling. Very amusing to see
a replay from someone else, you just know what he felt and thought
when he was driving his lap!

Eldred, I think the biggest problem with your driving style is that
you're not driving smooth enough. Too often when you exit a corner,
you hit the gas, let it go a little bit, affraid of losing it, and
then you get back on the gas.

Like Greger wrote in his last post, it's all about exiting corners as
fast as possible. Once you exit a corner, you should get back on the
gas as soon as possible, without hesistating afterwards. Make sure you
exit the corner in an as straight as possible line, and don't brake or
let go of the gas untill it's really necessary. If you overdo it, try
to exit the corner a little later next time, untill you get the hang
of it. Then you can try to exit the corner just a little bit sooner
next time.

Have you ever compared your replays with GPLDump and GPL Replay
Analyzer? You can learn so much from this. Especially the Replay
Analyzer is perfect for comparing where the fast guys exit a corner
and where you exit it.

If I may . . . My PB at Spa is 3:26 and in looking at EldredP's lap I
can see some of the same mistakes that I also make. The main one being
not using the whole track!. My problem is that I can not force myself
to trust the image I am seeing, as in I turn in too early! What is the
best way to force yourself to use the whole track? I have this problem
at all the other tracks also. I tend to turn in way too early. Do I
need someone with a ruler next to me when I am racing to whack me when
I turn in early? I have noticed that some times I try to wait, and
find I waited too long. Then I am just mowing the grass, spinning on
my head, or who knows what.
