3dfx card need help to get it to work

by Wosc » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hello,
On my parents computer, I put in an old voodoo1 card (diamond) to compliment
their AMD 350.  It all installs correctly, loads the drivers, can change
settings everything, but no games recognize it, no programs to select a d3d
device or opengl device recognize it and when i go to device manager and
click on computer to see the IRQ, i think it is using IRQ 9 (no others on
it) but it is saying it is an unknown device there, doesnt say it is my 3d
card.  Ive gotten the new drivers also, still wont work.  Any ideas?

From my old DOS days, I hated IRQ 9.  It was shared with IRQ 2 (if that makes
sense to you :-).

I have my second ethernet card on IRQ 9 and it works fine, but the Monster might
not like it.  Try changing the IRQ to 10, 11 or 12 using CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM
/ DEVICES.  (Oops I'm on NT Workstation now so I can't remember the exact
choices).  Of course change the IRQ to one that is not conflicting with any
current devices.

To test the card, Diamond has a test program to verify everything is working --
try that before any games.

Jason.

    At the risk of starting a "tech-war" (but this IS important info) IRQ 2
is actually "cascaded" to IRQ 9.  The original XT only had 8 IRQs.  When the
AT came out they added 9-15.  To "get to" the higher IRQs, they used IRQ 2
to "point to" 9 allowing access to the upper IRQ's.
    I agree that it's GENERALLY a bad idea to use either 2 or 9.  I ALWAYS
try to force cards into the upper IRQs whenever possible - you never know
when you're gonna get a card that WON'T support higher IRQ's (8bit boards).
    Generally:
    3 = Com 2 and 4
    4 = Com 1 and 3
    5 = LPT2: and sound card
    6 = floppy (?)
    7 = LPT1: (printer)
    8 = RTC (open on some computers)
    9 = redirector from 2
    10 = NIC
    11 = video card
    12 = PS/2 Mouse
    13 = open
    14 = open
    15 = 2nd IDE Channel.  If you use an old IDE CD on the secondary
channel, it needs IRQ15.

I moved my card around making sure it had no conflicts with the slots, same
thing.  This is gettin on my nerves.

I think I found the problem.  When I thought it was assigning it IRQ 9, it
really isnt giving it an IRQ at all.  I looked at the resources and it has a
memory range but no IRQ.  The number 9 IRQ gives you some sort of vague
thing like, something is here but we dont know what which, since i didnt see
the monster anywhere else, I assumed it was there.  So this is just more
info, I dont know if it will help diagnose.

Well now that I look at my computer, my voodoo2 12MB also doesnt have an IRQ
but this one works, its just my parents' computer doesn't seem to want to
recognize it for the games, it recognizes it to add hardware though.

hi dont think the voodoo1 cards use an interupt....
but i had trouble with an old v1(diamond also)
loaded latest drivers and changed the memory range manually
(voodoo under sound video and game controllers with my drivers)
in resources uncheck use automatic settings double click on memory range and
select a range that is 2-3 settings from any other device)
hope this helps :)

Jesse,

    I still use a Diamond Monster 3dfx voodoo l with my new AMD K6-2
350. And my system recognized the board just fine. Make sure that the
new drivers you installed are for the Voodoo l and not the 2. I use the
2.43 versions,and everything works great. I don't upgrade unless I need
to. "Don't fix-it,if it ain't broken..".

    The installation is plug and play,but make sure that there aren't
any conflicting programs or files 1lst.

Hi Wosco,

One more thing.   If you are using the original voodoo1 drivers from the
installation disk -- they do not support DirectX 6.x.  I assume you are using
DX6, so get the current voodoo1 drivers from http://www.diamondmm.com.

Jason.
