Yes. One of the first things I tried was having a big fan blowing on the CPU
and graphics card. Besides, it's only happening online. If it was heat, it
would happen offline as well.

David, this is a little out of left field, but 'Achim reminded me of this with
his "calling home" reference, & you have tried almost everything else.

Have you run Ad-Aware from Lavasoft (www.lavasoftusa.com) to see if you have any
spyware running?  I ran it some time ago, & again just now, & found a
"suspicious" entry which I backed up, then removed.  I thought I was safe from
this kind of thing, but apparently wasn't.  At first, this wouldn't seem to
apply, but the more I thought about your problems... what can it hurt?  (just
make sure to back up anything suspicious b4 you remove it)

Unlikely, but HTH

Congrats To Zug Zug, the winner of the RASCAR Michigan 80!

I wouldn't think it would be your internet connection since this would
just be a warping issue.  If you are running XP, do like others have
suggested in this thread and look at which services you are running.
I am now running XP pro and I was able to disable a ton of services.

You may want to also check to see if you Cable Modem and your Video
card are sharing an IRQ.  If they are maybe this could explain why you
have more problems on line.  Theoretically they should be able to
share an IRQ but everything I have read suggests that you make sure
that your video card has an IRQ all to itself.

It is actually too bad that you don't still have the freezes off-line
because if you did you could just pull the Cable Modem out and see if
that solves the problem.

Also, I had a problem a while back with N2002 under win98 related to
video.  I wasn't getting screen freezes but rather full lockups.
After several weeks I finally narrowed it down to the 4-in-1 drivers
for my VIA chipset on my motherboard.  I had upgraded to the latest
VIA chipset drivers and didn't have any problems in any other games
except N2002.  I went back to the 4-in1 drivers that shipped with my
MB and it solved the problem.  Among other things the 4-in-1 drivers
allow AGP 4x.

Also, did you do a clean install of XP home or did you install over a
previous OS?

Commet cursor and gator are spyware...they track your web adventures.
The only trouble I had getting rid of gator once,  the ad-aware program
found a 'gator' inside of Age of Kings....well...it WAS an (alli)gator not
the spy program...Had to re-install to fix it....
WhenEVER you go to a site that want to mess with your cursor...do NOT
allow/agree/accept any of the suggested changes...
Hopefully this will fix things for you...good luck.

What he said  ^^^     ;-)

Also, both are known (or at least suspected, depends on who you believe) to
"phone home" regularly, & with a processor/graphics intensive app like N2002,
*could* explain your intermittent, short term screen freezes, esp. w/ a 24/7
type connection, even when playing offline.

OTOH, it could be something else, but...   only 1 way to find out.   ;o/

It's in core.ini, in the [tasking] section. Set the parameter
enable_watchdog to 0 to disable it.

If they 'phone home' from time to time, yes, they can have been the culprit.

Honestly, though, if you're at this level of checking your system, you
probably have a lot more running in the background than you are aware of.
Not necessarily 3rd party stuff, I'm talking about XP's own services. Do you
know that several module of XP can call home as well in regular intervals,
unless you tell them not to? And that XP limits your online bandwidth by
always reserving a huge chunk of it for itself?

Good recommendation!

Ya damned skippy!

Two of the most well-known spyware programs of all time!

Ok, disabled it, but what exactly does it do when it's on?

Yeah, what he asked :)

Is there a document that documents every line of the NR2002 ini files ?

It sure isn't in that poor-excuse for a manual.  Man, talk about
dissapointing!  Eric, wazzup with dat manual, man!

I cannot tell you precisely how they programmed it, but it sounds like some
code that monitors requests from WinXP's tasking system, and lets N2002
respond to them. That can of course cause little pauses as it may require
N2002 to service the requests somehow.

Again, I can't say how precisely they implemented it, but obviously since
its function is to listen to the system and react to it, it is something
that can cause pauses as N2002 may be forced to do something about signals
it gets from the watchdog.

I think with it off you cannot Alt-Tab anymore, btw, because N2002 no longer
listens to these requests. Of course, you can't Alt-Tab in OpenGL anyway, so
if you use that, you don't lose anything.
