 From the 1.2.0.1 patch:

"* When throttle or brake are assigned to a digital control such as a
keyboard key or joystick button, traction control and anti-lock brakes
can now be disabled."

Granted that them adding the ability to disable these aids is probably
more related to the "*** mode" than anything else. I still gotta
thank them, regardless of motivation, for doing this.

In one my previous posts I mentioned my complaint about this with
NR2003/4, and how I wouldn't be supporting Papy with my purchase. Living
up to my word, I retract my complaint and now I'll be more than happy to
part with my money to buy a copy. In fact, I'll order a copy from
amazon.com within the next few days.

Thank you, Papy devs.

The problem is there is too much hysteresis.  When you disable
traction control there is no way to control the car if the rear wheels
should break traction.  If they do so, even if you release the button
at that same instant the power stays on and a spinout occurs.  You
have to drive the car in anticipation of breaking traction every
second.

Update: I just placed my order for NR2003. With any luck it should
arrive within a week. :)

If you're driving with a digital controller or keyboard then you were never
the target market for this product and your money wasn't missed. ;)

I usually have two methods to handle that situation:

1. Either have the gears set a little higher than the default setup, or
keep the car one gear higher until it's time to apply throttle. I've
been making it a habit of driving most tracks so I have less
acceleration, yet still have a decent top-end speed.

2. Clickity-clickity-clickity in the turns. :) This involves repeatedly
clicking the accel button so I'm not as likely to spin the tires. Of
course this is directly tied to #1.

ANYONE who wants decent playability with a driving sim does not use a
digital control for steering or gas/brake....it just makes for lousy
gameplay.

That's really a true statement (even though I also own NR2002). At one
time I did have a wheel, but since it's been broken I've had to use a
joystick. But now that they're letting users turn off those aids, I'll
gladly spend the money...even if Papy doesn't care. It's the thought
that counts, IMO. ;)

What it comes down to is that I've gotten a ton of enjoyment out of the
NASCAR Racing series, despite not always having a wheel. And now, unlike
before, I have no reason to not buy the game.

I'm so glad. Why not go mad and order a wheel and pedals too?

*laughs* I have more than decent playability using digital controls for
accel/brake.

NR2002 - decent
LFS - great
NT2003 - great
NASCAR Heat - great
DTR2 - great
Mafia (the driving aspect) - great

It's just a case where a person needs to get used to using digital
controls. NR2002 was the only game where I ran into limitations of what
I could do.

I think as long as a driver is able to keep up with the field and is
safe, then it shouldn't matter what controller s/he is using.

Not enough money to spend on a good wheel right now. I'll see how things
pan out around Christmas, though. With $20 to spare, I purchased NR2003.

There are good wheels under 50$, btw ;)

Except that gamepad users and users other digital controls are the same
halfwits that swerve all over the track and cause the wrecks.  YOu just buy
a $20 analog joystick and you can solve all your problems.

Maybe, but I can admire the man's integrity in retracting his previous
complaint.  That's a totally separate issue from gameplay...<g>
