I just purchased a new system for my father. It's a standard Compaq Presario
2.133GHz S5000CL-B Desktop right off the shelf. The only modification I've
made to the system (aside from Windows Updates and such) is to install a new
Visiontek GeForce4 Ti4600 video card. Now, here's the problem I'm having, I
make a single change to DirectX via the DirectX Diagnostic Tool; I go to the
"Sound" tab and move the "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" slider from the
farthest right setting of "Full Acceleration" to one step to the left -
which is "Standard Acceleration". Then I click on the "Exit" button in the
lower left. So, this setting sticks for a week or so and NR2003 works fine,
then suddenly his game starts
dumping back to the desk top. I talk him through opening the "DirectX
Diagnostic Tool" and,
sure enough, this sound setting has been auto-magically changed back to the
"Full Acceleration" setting. The system has the latest version of DirectX
and onboard Integrated AC-97 sound.
What would like to know is:
1.) Why the system keeps resetting this sound setting.
2.) How I go about insuring that this setting stays as I desire.
I've had one friend tell me to have him install an seperate sound card, and
while this is easy for you or I, he's several states away and, believe it or
not, installing a sound card is simply over his head right now.
Thank you in advance.
