Reinstall of Windows and...ID is missing

by Rolf Weseman » Sun, 22 Sep 2002 22:54:36

Hi,
this is a little bit off topic, but I need help:
Did a windows 98SE reinstall on my GPL Computer and, then came the question
about the ID No. I cannot find it, because I have switched the original
Paperbox of my original Windows98SE to a Plastic box and it seems, I have
thrown the paperbox with the ID No. away. I have a second version of
original Windows 98SE (Two Computers=2 systems ;-)) and: the same here.
Where can I find an ID No.??? Because its saturday and no GPL the weekend is
hard!!!

Thanks in advance,
Rolf

You're looking for a windows 98SE serial number right?
Search google for "Windows 98SE Serial Number". Or possibly search kazaa for
"Windows 98SE Key Gen".

You didn't hear it from me though.. :)

Hmmm no.  Do software stores even sell Windows 98 SE anymore these days?
There has been 2 newer generation of Windows OS after that (ME/2000 and XP).
It's not like he's trying to do anything wrong here.

Oh dear!

"Shocking..." was an ironic response to the comment "You didn't hear it from me
though.. :)" bearing in mind this newsgroup's general approach to copied
software. As you rightly point out this is not like a "help me I seem to have
lost my N2002 key" plea! It was not intended seriously.

The lack of a smiley might convey the dead pan way it was intended or it might
just be taken seriously. Obviously the latter, which is my mistake.

Cheers

We don't know that....not that I care anyways, and yes, Win98SE is
available if people want to buy it, it's just not available as a
"genuine" OEM option anymore, if I want to sell a PC with W98 I have to
buy a CD and install from that, which is both more cumbersome and more
expensive than just installing it from the server and slapping a sticker
on it

I peel the sticker off the cardboard sleeve and put it INSIDE
the front of a jewel case along with the CD. I also take a
Sharpie and write the number on the CD as well!

Just a long shot.

Did your copy come with the machine you bought or did you buy your windows
software seperately?

If it is an oem version as supplied with the machine by the manufacturer,
you might find a sticker on the back of your computer case containing the
code

Win98SE is probably the best of the 9x/ME series. It's generally the
most stable. The problem is that Microsoft is soon dropping support. There
will soon be no new patches for any security or other problems. Newer
software may not work with it.

I ran into a problem at work where I couldn't install sound drivers
under Win98 (original). I don't see any real difference between it and SE,
but I was forced to upgrade just to get the sound to work!
