GTL Graphics problems

by Kevin Barne » Wed, 01 Mar 2006 01:52:42

I have just loaded GTL on my pc and even at lowest resolution and lowest
detail i have slow down on screen and also graphis problems mainly being red
patches on the travk and trackside.
I meet the minimum spec. I have an Athlon 2400 with 512 ram and an ATI
Radeon 9000 card with latest drivers. Also have latest direct x

Is this common or do i have a problem. It plays on my lap top but that is
fairly high spec.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Try to set the video mode in GTL Config.exe to DirectX 7 or try 8 first, but
I think, with your system, 7 is better. You will see only small differences
between them.

I have tried direct x 7 but this changes the red to blue?  Still i terrible
slow down when more than 1 other car about. Is my system simply not up to
it?

Old cards need old drivers,  and I cant recall but the 9000 wasn't it a
problem?

I'm guessing that's your problem, no matter what the minimum specs might
say. GTL's pretty demanding and the 9000 is a loooong way down the 3D
pecking order.

I may have to look at a new graphics card. How do i find out what ineed. I
read about PCI,  pci express and agp ?. Also what would you recommend as a
decent card without paying a fortune. Are gee force or radeons better?
any help appreciated

Your motherboard will be AGP, so forget all that PCI-E stuff unless
you're going to buy a whole new PC.

Best bag for buck these days seems to be a GF 6600GT, and you can pick
one up for about 100 these days. (ebuyer.co.uk for a start).

Spending less than that gets you into a messy area where it's easy to be
disappointed. A second hand 9800Pro from ebay might be worth a try.
Still a good card after all this time.

How do you know for sure it is AGP. It is an Evesham and about 3 years old
many thanks

PCI-E has only been around for about 1.5 years. Your computer is sure to
have AGP graphics.

Three years ago PCI-e was pretty much still on the drawing board, so
it's highly likely your mobo has an AGP slot (unless it's a total
el-cheapo PC, I've seen mainboards from that era that don't even sport
an AGP slot ;)

Cheers, uwe

It would be much slower than the 6600GT mentioned here. Don't know about GTL
performance.

Hey Uwe I just wanted to throw out a congratulations to Germany on another
great Olympics.  Someday Bodine may actually make a decent sled with which
the USA can compete with you speed demons :)

I've never seen anyone recommend a 6200, which seems to come in several
versions. The 5200 was shyte. But the 4200 was a great card for its
time. So I can only suggest you spend ages trawling through Google
reviews and user experience before committing yourself to anything. You
might want to spend a bit of time getting up to speed on AGP/PCI-E as
well to stop yourself accidentally buying the wrong thing.

FWIW I've regretted spending "not enough" money more times than I've
regretted spending too much. Of course the sensible answer may be to
play on your laptop and save yourself some money! :-)

If you have ever stumbled across the relative slowliness of graphics chips
that are integrated on to the mainboard, you would be worried about the
6200: it is also used as a motherboard-integrated chipset, and can also be
found in some laptops, I think.

No-no for serious *** that one. It is nice to see that laptops are
starting to have something vaguely similar graphics performance and chipset
generations as desktops, though.
