Online costs, how expensive is a minute in your country?

by J » Tue, 15 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,
I'm curious.
Wanna know how much online costs are allover the world. All kinds of
connections are of interest. Please include line- and internet-charges.

For quality comparison: What is the typical ping you can race and what is the
biggest race you can host without hickup?

For myself:
Malaysia analog 33,6K / US$ 0,39 per hour / ping 400 to 700 / can host 4 player

In the UK, with a standard 56k modem, on the 'BT Together' tariff (two
lines), assuming local call dialup:

UK1.80/hour daytime, 0.60/hour evenings & weekends. This is just for
calls - the ISP itself is free. I use BT's "Best Friend" discount,
which reduces the cost to 1.44/hour daytime, 0.48/hour evenings &
weekends.

My PC refuses to run VROC properly, so I'll leave the other questions
to others :-)

Was paying $20.00 Canadian($13.80 U.S.) for 100hrs pr/month for 56k
dialup, now I'm paying $40.00 pr/month for cable, which is unlimited
hrs. Haven't hosted yet but cable is GREAT for VROC !

From Australia as well, $30 per month for unlimited hours, 56k
connection.
Seperate phone line costs $15 per month, $0.20 per call (untimed)

My ping is between 150-300 within Australia, 500 + to the US, UK, etc.
No idea about hosting though....

Hi, I'm at university in the UK, by far the fastest and
cheapest connection to the net.

I pay 10 month to be connected, then I can use the net as
much as I want for no extra charge.  My college does have to
pay 0.02 per megabyte for transatlantic traffic, but they
quite happily pay that for us.

Download speeds vary from site to site, I have the fastest
download record from microsoft.com (!!!), I downloaded the
130Mb DirectX SDK in under 5 minutes!!

Hosting 19 players on GPL is fine, pings normally less than
100 to anyone in the UK, less than 10 if they are also at a
university.

race and what is the
700 / can host 4 player

I'm in the US here, using a 56K dialup thru FlashNet.  The phone calls
to my ISP are free, my ISP charges me $164.99 once a year prepaid.  So
that comes out to about $13.75 a month.

Scott, great server, I raced on it last night -
Any chance we could use that for the UKGPL series? (If we're not
already?)

I'm in the UK, Telco is Cable & Wireless.

Costs are about 0.55/hour at weekends (56k dialup connection), which is
when I do all my racing. Pings to good European servers are about
150-200, to the US it's about 200-400.

ISDN: 1,31$/hour and 3.15$/hour in peak hours... something like that
I hate Belgium <G>...

I'm switching to cable (only 39$ monthly), it's getting unaffordable...
I think we're one of the most expensive in the world.
