What is the URL for the UKGPL series?

I live in the UK and have changed my phone line from BT to Localtel
they give me...

FREE calls to ISP from 6pm to 8am (off-peak)
from Friday midnight to Sunday midnight is also FREE calls to ISP.

I.E. 118 FREE hours to the ISP per WEEK

Only problem is you have to use their free ISP which is a little bit
slow at
times, i.e. not fast enough for GPL. + you may have a little trouble
connecting
at busy times i.e. from 7-9pm at the moment I have to retry between 1-20
times
at these busy times but the money I save on downloading/browsing I CAN
spend on GPL.
I.e. connect with faster ISP e.g. Demon.

Typical phone bill is 25 per month which is ~ $40 and these charges are
mostly to connect
to the Demon ISP.

+ I can leave my computer downloading stuff all night with no bad
dreams.

+ with localtel ALL other calls are 10% cheaper than BT except calls to
mobiles which
  are the same.

+ friends and family equivalent. i.e. 10% off 9 number + 20% off 1 "best
friend"

+ 1471

+ call divert etc. if you want them.

+ you don't have to put in a number before dialling, it's completely
seamless.

+ Your number remains the same.

They have had some bad press, most notably on the "Watchdog" program on
BBC, but
the report was even more biased than their usually exceptionally biased
reporting.
I.e. go after the small fry rather than tackling the real problem which
is obviously
BT's extortionate and massively overcomplicated rates. They even went so
far as to suggest
that once you change to localtel you can't use any other ISP, which is
complete Bulls**t.
You can dial any number in the UK including any other ISP i.e.
***.NET Demon etc.
+ for 10% less than BT!!! In fact that report was THE MOST shoddy piece
of "journalism"
I have seen in my life. If anyone saw the report and knows anything
about localtel
would be left wondering whether BT secretly sponsor the "Watchdog"
program or something.

Anyways enough rambling. If you live in the UK check this url:
www.localtel.co.uk

They have a FAQ which even satisfied my Devils Advocate dad so even the
most cynical
can at least take a look!

P.S. Even if you hate their service you can break the contract for a
nominal fee of 18
which seems pretty good value seeing as they pay BT 23 to transfer you
account to them
and they don't even pass that charge onto you!

P.P.S. If you think your modem is far too slow and live in the UK then
check out
www.demon.net/adsl (This information regarding the rollout of Demon's
ADSL service
+ an opportunity to take part in the TRIALS!!!)

Scott, great server, I raced on it last night -
Any chance we could use that for the UKGPL series? (If we're not
already?)

Here in Sunny South Africa it is R3.00 (about US$0.50) an hour
between 7pm-7am and at weekends.  Unfortunatly a ping of 800 is
exceptionally good here:(  At least the beer is cheap though:)

Online costs, how expensive is a minute in your country?

I am in the Uk and I have a 56k analog line which is not too bad for
WinVRoc. Yesterday I received my phone bill: 400.00!!?!?!?!?!?!?
No more VROC for me until something cheaper comes along. I believe
that connecting to the internet should cost something like a TV
license (100.00 per year). In saying that I never understood what you
receive in return for paying your tv license, certainly not good
programs. I am not from this country and I believe paying to watch tv
is a complete nonsense, and I am sure most people don't appreciate it
either.
BT rips me off big time. I am going to cable now, as all my wise mates
have done so, and have cheaper phone bills.
Still, I emphasize, data calls should not cost so much!!!!!!!
I will only play at the weekends now, I have learned my lesson. BT has
made sure of that!
I hate extra large companies like BT and many others out there, they
are the ones who actually can provide a better service for a better
price, as they have the infrastructure and a big slice of the market,
but instead they choose to rip customers off as much as they can.
I'll start my own phone compay some day (sure...)
My post probably side-tracks from the subject a little but what the
hell, I am pissed at my phone bill.

I use a free ISP.

Cheers

Mauricio.

My main internet connection in the UK is with CIX. (I also have a couple
of *free* ISP's too). I pay 15.00 per month for my CIX connection
(which includes great conferencing facilities and e-mail and webspace as
well as a connection to the Internet!)

I think Cix charge around 4p per minute off peak (2.40 per hour) and
around 1p per minute off peak times, (0.60 per hour) evenings and
weekends. And the connection is usually rock solid (not so with the
*free* ISP's)

Which bit? The original poster said....

He wants to know what costs are involved, so my reply was regarding what
my specific costs are. I (and many friends and colleagues) have also
tried a few *free* ISP's, and on each occasion the connection has not
been as good or reliable as a connection which is paid for. Thats not a
generalisation, its my (and friends and colleagues) personal experience.

In my experience in life generally, you get what you pay for. Free
ISP are ok, but I'll take my paid ISP with an almost
guaranteed good connection every time over a free ISP where you *may*
get a good connection, if you are lucky! If you always have a good free
connection, great. But I think you are one of the lucky ones.

Since they don't charge you for the line, did they ask to put some advertising
on your car?  ;-)

This is the bit I was referring to.

As I said I may well be one of the lucky few when it comes to this aspect of
the free ISP's.. Just hope it continues :O))

No.. I think they must have seen me racing and decided that they would
rather not have their name associated with a vehicle that more often than
not is upside down or running with less than a full complement of
wheels......

Easy job:
no advertising on the wheels and
company sticker upside down on the car :-)
