N2: Error...In Need of desperate help...

by Lis » Wed, 26 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Thisis about the fifth time this has happened.  When trying to run N2
through DOS, I run the "nascar2" exe.  I get this error saying "unable to
start screen.  Incomplete installation or possibly out of memory?"  I have
more than 15Meg left on the drive.  It's driving me nuts, because the only way
I found to fix it was to completely re-insatll N2, and then I end up having to
re-download all the cars, tracks, and utilities I have in thet N2 directory.
The last time this happened, I d/l'ed everything into a temp directory, but it
doesn't do a whole lot of good when you delete the *.zip files that you
already have installed.

   Any ideas?

Make sure the NASCAR 2 disc is in the drive, then try running the
N2.bat file. For instance, at the c:\sierra\nascar prompt, type in
"N2" and press enter. You should see an opening sequence
after you do this. Press escape to bypass this if you want, then
the game should boot up. I had the same problem...hehehe.

I have the full install; why would I need the CD?  I don't want to run the
N2.bat (I don't want to watch the movie); I have always run the "nascar2.exe"
with no problem (until recently that is...) and bypassed the opening movie
every time I run N2.  I run N2 from the d:\nascar2 directory (my secondary
hard drive) in DOS.  It only recently started doing this "unable to start
screen..." crap.

Sorry to hear that, all I can say is the game won't boot up on my
system without it (and I too did the full install) . You can bypass
the movie by pressing the ESC key. You'll be happy to know that when
you're on TEN and when a race is launched, you don't have to have the
CD in.  :- )

Lisa,

You can also edit the N2.bat file to comment out the line that starts with
"smackply" (or something like that).  To comment it out, place "REM" in front of
it; REM stands for remark and is the DOS way of commenting out a line in a bat
file.  The smackply line is the line that plays the video from the CD.  By
commenting out that line, you can eliminate the need for the CD if you did a full
install!

Hope it helps!

I don't know what's going on, but this whole thing is real weird.  I
have a full install, but it won't load the Main menu without the CD.  It
will load the Papyrus Splash screen and then drops back to DOS.  So I
did another complete install on another drive (along with the BGN pack).
This time the program will load the Menu screen only it is torn
(mis-aligned).  I can then go to the race menu, but when ever I choose
to enter a track the program locks up solid.   The original full
installation still reads the CD-ROM even though everything is on my
hard drive, it does this for every screen and every track....  What's
the point of a full installation (to foster Hard Disk sales?)?

Even stranger.  I have installed the BGN pack and running the
non-Rendition version with a full install doesn't read the CD (except
for a quick check to see that it is there).  However, nasrend.exe reads
the CD instead of the harddrive.  Papyrus, do we need a patch?  Please
help us out....

One or more of the files that are on the CD are not on your hard drive.
I had to dump some of the car files when my HD was getting to full.  I
recently added a new HD and found that I had to reload the missing cars
to get the program to run without the CD.  Make sure you have all of the
files on the CD in the NASCAR2 directory and all sub-directories under
it.  When the program detects that there is a file missing, it will
always access the CD instead of your HD.

I was getting this error when I was trying to add a couple of dirt
tracks someone pointed out to me.  I put the Calendar file in the
tracks directory because I didn't want to overwrite my real calendar.
All of a sudden I couldn't run N2.  After about an hour, after having
deleted everything about those dirt tracks, I was still crashing.
Then I deleted the calendar file from the tracks directory and it
magically started working again.  I'm not sure why that caused
problems, but it did.

Hope this helps.

Another possibility is your too short on hard drive space. I know you said
you had 15 meg left, but that's really not a lot. Windows will use quite a
bit for virtual memory, depending on how much system ram you have. You may
try deleting some old files or programs you don't need anymore, and see if
you continue to get this message.
