Rally sim on country-sized map?

Flight simmers (I'm thinking specifically of MS Flight Simulator)
get data CDs so they can fly over real-world terrain.  I had a dream
last night about a round the world rally (ok ignore the oceans this is
dream logic remember?)-I would settle for simming the continental
US's interstate system so we could do some Cannonball runs cross-
country.  Would this still be too memory intensive at present?  How
much memory would you need for a project like that?

You only need to show a certain amount at a time, shouldnt be any more
memory intensive.  It would need alot of storage, but thats what a DVD is
for :).  At the same time, it wouldn't be easy to texture a whole country :)

Try Rally Championship, real tracks, very realistic looking and some of them
are very long 20mins +. It's also very fun, you should be able to pick it up
on budget now.

Hmmm... "The Great American Cross-Country Road Race II"?
Has Activision made any racing sims/games lately?

Way too much.

To do rally, you need resolution of the terrain in FEET if not INCHES.

Flight sims can get away with just satellite photos that has lousy rez.
Microsoft's FS2K2 just plops RANDOM objects onto the terrain
based on the underlying texture to make it more real. You don't have
to model collision with the ground often in a flight sim, ya know. :-)

Here you go, John. This is from news on Avsim, the flight sim site:

------------------

X-Plane developer Austin Meyer has set his sights on more Earthly
simulations over the last few weeks and is now close to the first
release of "X-PLANE AUTOMOTIVE." That is right a driving simulation
based on much of the same technology found in the X-Plane Flight
Simulator. "I am getting pretty close to release X-PLANE AUTOMOTIVE,
which is just exactly what the name implies,' Austin told newsgroup
members recently. "I am driving virtual Corvettes at 170 mph across
X-Plane-style landscape now, with all the physics accuracy (and
flexibility) that is found in X-Plane. (turbine motor on the 'Vette,
anyone?) This sim uses the current (latest) X-Plane rendering engine
and some elements of the "flight" engine." Those who fancy automotive
sims will find lots of flexibility in the new release. The well-known
Plane Maker and World Maker from X-Plane are built into the new
simulation so drivers can instantly check out new track and car
designs. "It will be a few weeks I think before I release, but the sim
is coming along fine," Austin noted. "So, for all the people that have
asked for a driving version of X-Plane (a LOT) you will soon get your
wish!" For now, there is no information on whether X-Plane Automotive
with get its own website or share the flight sim site. Your best bet
for keeping up on this new simulator would currently be the X-Plane
newsletter or the X-Plane website.

That sounds interesting. But I doubt there is an AI for racing, just driving
different cars around that you can create yourself. Shouldn't they be
calling it X-Car instead of X-Plane Automotive?

"Shodan"
Bethesda released a title called X-car several years ago....so that title
is out.  I suspect the programmer is trying to bring his loyal core flight
sim audience with him as he tries this out.  Would a flight simmer recognize
a racing title like say....
Experimental Car simulator.   I don't think so...but any sim-pilot whose
been exposed to Xplane will imeadiately pick up on the new direction.

I have X-Plane. My opiniom is not all good. But that's OT for here so will
refrain from giving my opinion.
