Ian Lakes Sets Online World Record in NTT GP Qualifier
The legendary Ian Lake has done it again! In the final NTT Australia qualifying race before this weekend's NTT World Championship Kyalami Grand Prix, Lake started at the back of grid without a qualifying time and was caught up in a start line altercation between two other competitors, yet succeeded in his heroic attempt to charge from last to first.
By the time he had tracked down front-runner Todd Galvin, whose impending doom was hastened by a black flag, Lake's absorption was complete! Taking the lead on lap 15 of the 24-lap event, Lake then put together a succession of magical laps that culminated in an unofficial online world record lap time of 1:19.48, just 0.03 seconds shy of the official off-line hotlap record of 1:19.45 held by Wolfgang Woeger!
Supercharged by his success, Lake then went off-line to attempt to break the absolute world record. Half an hour later, Lake had succeeded in recording a 1:19.45! But upon closer examination, it was discovered that Lake's precise time was 1:19.454, just 0.001 seconds short of Woeger's 1:19.453! Handicapped by the fatigue of driving into the early morning hours, an exhausted Lake smiled and said, "One-thousandth of a second off the record!!! So close, yet so far. Maybe tomorrow!"
This weekend's NTT World Championship Kyalami Grand Prix is shaping up to be a clash of the titans of epic proportion!
