Wilkes and Phoenix Help

by k.. » Sun, 28 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I hope someone can possibly steer me in the right direction (no pun
intended) on the North Wilkesboro and Phoenix tracks in NASCAR Racing.
I've done well and can run up front on most of the tracks, but these two
continue to cause problems for me.  I really like Wilkesboro, but I've only
been able to reach slightly over 109 mph in qualifying.  I also have quite
a bit of trouble running in traffic there.  I've tried various set-ups and
adjustments, but nothing seems to achieve any better results than the
standard qualifying set-up.  Also, the car is always a bit too loose for
quick acceleration, but brushes with the outside wall are too close as it
is without tightening the set-up.  Does anyone know how I can get a good
qualifying speed at Wilkesboro and how I can keep the car stable for actual
races?

At Phoenix, I have no problems achieving good speeds and can get the pole,
but racing in traffic is next to impossible.  I can't keep the car stable
enough and many of the computer drivers do not respect my line.  I AM using
the Formula T2 steering wheel and pedals, in case you want to know.  Any
help would be appreciated.

Also in the long sweeping right hander after the Double Chicane, keep
your speeds around 90-92 so you will be in "shape" to really accel
coming out of that long sweeper..  A lot of people barrel too fast
going in.

Whaaaaaat??  Doesn't every WC driver get his start by riding in on a
Harley to Daytona and setting the pole speed in someone elses
car on the 3rd lap??  <g>  (Well maybe Tim Richmond....)
{Course I thought of Days of Thunder when John Andretti decided to
run into Bobby Hamilton after the race...}

These two tracks are among the worst at exacerbating the physics bug in
NASCAR. It's a lot easier to get a decent setup running MULTI. My
suggestion is to try a little more negative camber on the RF and positive
camber on the LF. This will help the car get through the corner. You can
also try reducing RF tire pressure and increasing RR tire pressure. The car
should not be quite as loose at the beginning, but after the tires warm up,
it will start loosening up, hopefully about the time the car starts getting
tight due to the weight shift bug. Just accept that you're going to lose a
few positions at the start while the car comes in.

Let's see now, Wilkes, the "traction bug" is present here big time!!
Try using "soft shocks, and brake early." Your line is very important
here!! I have slowed all the way down 85 mph in the turns and still
managed a 116.xxx. My personal blap is a 118.730mph. For racing, take
a comfortable speed around the track. Don't always be aggessive, and
your tires will like you for that.

Phoenix, hmm..how do I start?? It's your line again. You see even
though it looks like an oval, it's actually a road course. Since each
turn is different. I have managed a 135.6xxx there in testing.

Now keep in mind, when you download all the setups on the "net", don't
have "high" expectations of running a "fastlap", okay. I personally
feel you should learn howto setup a car first, before venturing out
for setups. You can get ideas when you use the setups that you have
downloaded though.

have any questions just email me..cool??

take care..

You really should be racing on Hawaii, you would clean up. The best qual at
N.Wilkes is a 112.917, I think best laps are probably running about 114-115
in the sprint races. The best qual is Phoenix is 132.887 and I imagine the
best sprint laps are probably 133-134. The other track you mentioned was
Watkins Glen where you qualifed at 123.xxx, and the best qual on Hawaii was
a 121.372. I'd love to see how you've managed to best everyone at three of
the toughest tracks by 2 MPH. How about posting replays of those fast laps
on the binaries group so we can all see how it's done?

Hmmm... It was C***te, not Daytona. Nevermind the track, it's still a
ridiculous notion. Still, I kinda liked the movie. Nevermind the pile of BS;
listening to it in Surround Sound is awesome!!

What's funny about that movie is that NASCAR and everyone associated with
it (teams, drivers, etc) absolutely hated the movie.  The studio went in
saying they wanted to make a movie really portraying what it's like to be
a driver in NASCAR.  When the movie came out, NASCAR and others associated
with the sport were livid.

What part of the movie were you talking about? If you're talking about the
scene near the beginning when he rides in and drives the wheels off Rowdy
Burns' car in that test session, then that was C***te. If you're talking
about the first race of the season, the race where he and Rowdy have their big
crash, or the CLIMACTIC ending to the movie, then that was Daytona.

Trust me, I've only seen the movie about thirty times (great Surround Sound!!!)

I seem to remember high banks in that initial sequence, ala Daytona.
Perhaps the next time it comes on network TV (CBS, perhaps?)

You can't take anything in that movie seriously.  That's why it's
referred to as 'The NASCAR Follies'

Also I hope noone uses that movie as an inspiration to drive MP. If so,
I'm gonna climb in the tub and open up an artery! (g)

How could you watch that movie 30 times?  I'm a big Nascar fan and I had
trouble watching the whole thing.  The whole story was weak.  The driving
scenes were really stupid.  Every race someone was telling their pits that they
were gonna "put him in the wall".  They tried to make Nascar exciting for
idiots that watch movies.  How gay.
