Favourite racing games?

by David Butte » Mon, 28 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I know this subject has been done to death, but it's interesting to come
back to it every so often. So, just out of pure vulgar curiosity, what are
people's favourite racing games? Here's my list (in descending order, only
including games I own the full version of, and sticking to cars):

Grand Prix Legends      (how could it be otherwise? Sublime.)
Rally Championship      (it's pushing my hardware, but what a game.)
Sports Car GT                   (I've only just got SCGT - for ten quid! - and I
*like* it.)
Netw'k Q RAC Rally Ch'p         (very underrated this - still a great
challenge.)
Colin McRae Rally       (a bit arcadey, but a very nicely done game.)
TOCA (version 1)                (I haven't got TOCA 2 - this is enough fun for
now. No mirrors, though.)
Le Mans 24 Hours                (how can a game this new not have rear view
mirrors?? But it *is* the full Le Mans circuit, and is rather good fun.)
CART Precision Racing           (rather bland, but the close racing is nice.)
Grand Prix 2                    (used to be way up my list, but getting pretty
tired now, and doesn't have FF. Come *on*, Sir Geoffrey!)
F1 Racing Simulation            (not great, not bad. Doesn't stir the soul.)
Screamer 2                      (doesn't pretend to be anything other than an
arcade game - and all the better for it. Not my cup of tea, though.)
Int'l Rally Ch'ship     (the worst of this series.)
NASCAR 1                        (I just don't get on with it - never been really
sure why not.)
Formula 1 '97                   (flashy arcadey thing, pretends to be a sim.)
Power F1                        (didn't know I still had this, actually.)

All IMHO, naturally!

Here's a list of my favorites
1)  Nascar Racing 3 - Just the best stockcar game available and with Daytona
it is now complete.

2)  Nascar Legends - Racing one of these beasts on a short track is a blast.

3)  Dirt Track Racing - Great career mode and very racey ai.  I have one
word for Ratbag, Outlaws.

4)  Nascar Racing 1999 - Trucks, and an update to Nascar 2, what else need i
say.

5)  Gran Turismo 2 - Great physics (for a playstation game), and an ungodly
number of cars.  But bugs and poor ai make snoozefests of the longer races.

Racing games are getting better all the time, of course, so the only
valid comparison of games today with older ones is how much fun they
were to play.  By that standard, Grand Prix 1 is at the top of the
list for me.  For realism, GPL will probably never be topped since it
was shown that the average gamer doesn't WANT a realistic game.  N3 is
a fine, playable simulation that doesn't take forever to learn to play
competitively.  The Need for Speed series is a nice diversion.

The games I'm most eagerly anticipating now are World Sports Car and
GP3...

I find that I tend to waffle around. I'll play one game exclusively for a
few weeks, then switch to another and not play the first one for months.
That said, my Top 10:

1) Grand Prix Legends. Tough, but cool. I admit to liking to race F3 more
than F1.
2) Sports Car GT. Best graphics (at least on my system). Gotta download the
additional cars though. Racing the Panoz roadster is a total blast!
3) Need For Speed III. I've got Need For Speed IV too, but I dunno, I just
like III better.
4) Midtown Madness. Fun!
5) F1 Racing Simulation. Imperfect, but decent.
6) Indycar Racing II (except I have to run it on my Mac (sans wheel and
pedals), as it won't run on my P400.
7) NASCAR 1999 (except it doesn't support my video card).
8) Motocross Madness. Fun!
9) Monster Truck Madness. Fun!
10) Star Wars Racer. Fun!

How about my worst 5?

1) Sega Rally. A joke.
2) Sega Touring Car. Another joke.
3) NHRA Drag Racing. Lame, boring after 2 or 3 runs.
4) Test Drive 5. Not in NFS's galaxy.
5) NASCAR Revolution.

David Butte

by David Butte » Mon, 28 Feb 2000 04:00:00

FWIW, here's my 'bottom 5' (in reverse order):

5) Daytona USA (what a waste of a licence)
4) Sega Rally (I mean, really. How can they do it this badly?)
3) Andretti Racing (I saw it in a bargain bin the other day for a pound.
Wildly overpriced)
2) GT Racing (French game - a huge disappointment)

and...

1) NASCAR Road Racing (without a doubt, the worst-designed, shoddiest
racing "sim" I have ever played. PC Gamer gave it something like 20% - they
must have been feeling very generous that day)

All these ratings are based on demos only - I've managed to avoid actually
buying them!

Daytona USA and Sega Rally are both ARCADE games.. not home games..
remember that..

they appeal to the "pick up and play" Genre.. like me, though I do like
sims aswell...

Everyone's got their likes and dislikes.. let's not get into a heated
arguement here :)

Starting with my favourite, it would go something like this:

1) GPL - Do I need to say any more? :-)
2) F1GP - I had so many hours of fun with this on my old 486, brilliant.
3) GP2 - Another classic :-)
4) Mario Kart - does this count? It should, and it's great!
5) N3 - I'm not a big NASCAR fan but this *is* a good sim...

Favourite racing games?

by <desti.. » Mon, 28 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Too many too list, lol. But one game that I *dont* have sadly is GPL. I live
in the middle of Nascar, Drag Race and Mud Boggin country here in Middle
Georgia, but how Sierra managed to sell *every* copy of GPL in the entire
middle georgia area, is beyond me, lol. Must be a "kick-ass" game like
Maximum PC mag rates things. I been searching for 2 months now, it's nowhere
to be found in any of the stores in the malls, wal marts, EB's, etc. One day
I'll get it, but anyways....

No order here...

F1GP - Wore this game out on my old Commodore Amiga, which I still use from
time to time, lol.

Nascar Racing 3, Nascar Racing Legends - everyone knows the oval stuff,
actually I like Legends better, but not as popular for some odd, bizarre
reason.

Nascar Racing 2, 1999 - These got me hooked on online racing, for an entire
week, was able to host NR1999 races on Heat.net with up to 6-8 people using
IPX over 56k modem with NO WARP. But then Heat.net changed their coding, it
became warp city, and I have never raced there since. Why do companies do
such idiotic things?? ROFL

Monaco Gran Prix Racing Simulation 2 - Awesome game with awesome graphics.
Made me recall my glory days with the F1GP game on my old Amiga. This game
is a blast, but in some ways, too damn hard for me, lol. Easy to get
accustomed to, but hard to tame. At least for me. Several of my redneck
nascar buddies got sucked in by this game and never looked back, they love
it too!

Sports Car GT - PSX version blows, PC version rocks. The closest thing I got
to Gran Turismo on the PC, until NFS:MC comes out. Great game and graphics,
reminds me of MGPRS2 but with GT cars. And any game that has Road Atlanta
has got to be a cool game, hehe. I really, really like this game.

Dirt Track Racing - Graphics and game are alot better than I expected for a
mid-priced game by a company I never heard of. Impressive to say the least.
Bought it more for the novelty of having a dirt track game and hoping it was
gonna turn out to be a good investment. It's fun all around, but I have
trouble beating the lowest ranked championship thingy in career mode.
Challenging game, just that I never watched alot, or played alot of dirt
track games and such, so I was like an extreme rookie, lol.

CART, Indy Car Racing II - Fun games here, though showing their age quite a
bit, still two good games. Makes for a good diversion from F1 games. Never
been a *** indy fan, but these games are fun and interesting. I guess
if Sierra needs to make some more/different games in the future, they need
to make Indy Car Racing 3 and a killer Formula 1 game to see how theirs
would look and compare. Personally I'd like to see a Trans Am series too.
Maybe a historic car cup game, like those vintage cup races they hold at
Laguna Seca. Have it where you could choose your time period and cars from
that era. Anyways...

TOCA 2 - I recently got bit by the Touring Car bug and I'm loving it. Fun,
fun game. The drivers displaying their emotions in the heat of battle is a
nice treat to see in a game. And has caused me to wreck at least once when I
see my driver shake his***at one of the other drivers in anger/disgust, I
just roll around laughing, then watch the replay a few times to laugh even
more. Don't know why I find that so amusing, lol, but it's a blast. I guess
maybe I'd do the same thing in real life racing.  ;o)  Anyways, I love this
game and on expert they work me over pretty good. Normal championship I can
win alot or finish near the top, while on expert I am doing good to finish
in the top 10 or somewhere in the middle of the pack.

I think that's pretty much all the PC games I got, might be forgetting some.
I sure did, Burnout Champsionship drag racing. Can't get it to work in 3d
with my Voodoo 3, but a cool drag race sim.

Here's a quick rundown of my PSX game for the hell of it...

Gran Turismo 1 & 2 - my faves for the PSX, outstanding games, kept me hooked
for a long time. The first helped me alot to learn proper driving
techniques, stuff I'd like to see in PC sims, kinda like tutorial type
things for rookie/intermediate drivers to help them get a grasp on the game
and proper driving. And would make a nice refresher for some of us crusty
veterans when moving between sims and lack some knowledge in the difference
(like moving from Nascar 3 to an F1 sim).

Formula 1 Championship Edition - I like this game alot. By Psygnosis, I
remember them from the good ol Amiga days. The commentators help add a bit
to this game, hehe. This, like TOCA2, gaurantees me messing up when I hear
or see certain things, mainly the commentators getting caught up in the heat
of the moment and shouting "Look at this!! Loooook Attttt Thhhiissss!!!!",
ROFL. I love em. I have wrecked upon hearing that cause I'm then checking
mirrors, left, right and everywhere trying to see why they are getting
passionate, hehe. Then bust out laughing and boom, race over or limping to
the pits. It's a trip.

CART World Series - This is one tough cookie for me. Running on full realism
at Homestead, there's no way I can keep up with the AI. I think the AI run
*too* fast. No matter how I tweak my setups, the AI can run through those
curves without letting off the gas, if I try to stay with them, I'm in the
wall and out of the race or I spin out and off into the infield grass. This
game gives the AI the supreme advantage and makes me wish I had never bought
it. It's biased against human racers, lol.

The game I'm now awaiting most is Need For Speed: Motor City. It's about
like the "Ultima Online" of racing sims. Will be somewhat like Gran Turismo
in the fact you start with a little cash and have to buy a car and work your
way up. But will be online community type thing like Ultima, where you
mingle with other players at the virtual drive-in, challenge them to illegal
street drag races, or head over to the legit drag strip for legit drag
racing. Road racing through the streets too. Mostly all muscle cars, but you
can do anything and everything with them. Engine swaps, total mods, pretty
much alot of things you see in games, but further in depth. Hehe, imagine
starting out with an old 72 Duster with 318, luck up and beat a few other
low budget rides and buy a bigger engine like 340, 383, 426, 440, etc, hehe.
Promises to be an amazing game with more than 40 cars. Complete garage to
house them, work on them, etc. Can create custom paintjobs for the cars,
then sell them for game money to other racers, ehhe. Or offer to fix, or
customize a car for other players, for game cash. This game should be a trip
and a half.

Regarding GPL, have a stroll through (believe it or not) your local TJ Maxx
next time your near it.  Another fellow in RAS mentioned this (and he was
from another part of the US; I'm in Nashville myself), and sure enough,
yesterday while at TJ Maxx myself, I saw a copy on their rollaway rack.
Pretty cheap, I'd imagine--but I was already waiting in a  l o n g line and
so didn't break away to check.
