TJ Maxx in Virginia Beach also had GPL for $12.99.

I was referring to the home versions of both games. The arcade versions
are fine, but the PC versions are dreadful, however you look at them.

Please don't call me "Usenet Police" for this, but could you guys
remember in the future NOT to quote an entire 200+ line message when
all you add is 2 lines of text?

Save bandwidth, we need it!

Favourite racing games?

Let me preface this by saying that my primary computer is a
non-accelerated notebook.  However, having tried every new sim, I wouldn't
change my list.  In order of preference:

1. GPL - only get to run this on the weekends on a friend's computer, but
it keeps me coming back for more.  One of these days I'll get around to
buying that desktop...  Not getting more than 4 hours a week means that
all the hotlap discussions are irrelevant for me, but I'm still e***d to
run in the top 5 with the AI.

2. NASCAR 2 gussied up with TPTCC and ICR2 tracks - great, close racing
and an enjoyable driving feel in its own way.  Occasionally switch back to
NASCAR mode and run some ovals.

3. GP2 patched up to 1999 season - the graphics are good enough with some
of the great 3rd party tracks, and the sim is still the best contemporary
F1 on offer.  Careful fiddling with the graphics options means it runs
well on my notebook, and never slows down.  The excellent keyboard support
makes it a travelling necessity.

That's it.  Everything else has come and gone.  Having tried all the new
products, I'm not sure a change to a proper desktop would change my list,
except that I would substitute N3 for N2.

OK i'll join in with my list, in no real order.

Grand Prix Legends     (goes without saying really)
GP & GP2
Stunt Car Racer        (have you all lost your memories? Why has nobody
                        mentioned this classic?)
IndyCar Racing II
Indy 500
RC2000
Gran Turismo           (overrated, but still lots of fun)
Superbikes
SCGT
TOCA 2
Driver                 (can I class this as a racing game? No, well i'll
                        include it anyway)
Revolt
Lotus Esprit II        (remember that Amiga classic anyone?)

Rick.

Hmm, tough one? As he said "games" I'll include arcade games as well as
sims.... I'd have to say of the games I actually own:

1)  GPL          (Has to be no'1 overall, no doubt)
2)  F1GP2        (Has to be no'2 for me)
3)  RC 2000      (Best rally game so far)
4)  TOCA2        (Best game for close racing)
5)  F1RS         (Nearly as good as GP2, but not quite)
6)  Motorhead    (Best looking arcade game)
7)  ICR2         (Good close racing)
8)  NASCAR2      (Great if you like ovals)
9)  Screamer 2   (Good pure arcade game, lots of sliding around)
10) F1GP         (A classic)
11) TOCA         (not as good as TOCA2)
12) RAC Rally    (Pretty good rally game)
13) GTA          (Well, its sort of a racing game?)

I reserve the right to change this list as and when it suits me
(depending what mood I'm in, and what game/sim I happen to be playing at
that particular moment).

And of course, all this will change when GP3, World Sports Cars, & F1
2000 are released......

Well my top five (and in no particular order since each was good
for its time or its type of racing):

GP2
GPL
NR99
SCGT

Well that is actually only 4, waiting in the wings would be ICR2
and TOCA and maybe N3 if I had it:)

Favourite racing games?

by <desti.. » Wed, 01 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi David, thanks for the tip. Dunno if there's any TJ Maxx's around my area,
might have to drive out of the "area" to find one, or something with GPL in
it, hehe. I'm talking Columbus, Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, etc, etc. I live
about 10 miles south of Macon, GA, so for the longest time, just a rest stop
for folks on their way to somewhere else, lol. Anyways....

There's a sim news site called High Gear located at
http://www.simracingnews.com/ that had a news story last week saying that
GPL would be "re-released" on Friday, Feb 25th in the typical "classics"
gold trimmed box with a budget price of $15-$20 range. So now I'm patiently
waiting on the local EB's, Wal Mart's, Babbages, etc, etc, to see if they
get some copies. The folks at EB kinda scoff and scrape their shoes on the
floors when I inquire about ordering a copy, hehe. But a guy took my name
and phone number 2 weeks ago and said he would check on finding a copy for
me, new, used, or whatever, told him I didn't care. No word since.  :/  And
funny, same employees that are friends with a guy I work with on the local
air force base, this guy uses his "friendship clout" to get them to burn him
copies of the latest games, sometimes using the store computer, lol. Think I
should go lean on these guys some to get them to fess up a boxed copy of GPL
in order to keep my mouth shut? ;o) I know the game is out there somewhere,
lol. Anyways, guess I better shut up before I get email bombed or have a
disgruntled employee shooting bullets my way, hehe.

I'll just keep looking for GPL in the meantime, but yes, thanks for the tip
on TJ Maxx, I'll try them. By the way, I got no credit cards, don't really
want them, unless it's a bank card, even then....i'm a skeptic. If a company
don't want greenbacks, cash, paper bills, i.e. "real money", then why should
I do business with them? Paying cash is the *easy* and preferred method.
Credit cards are a hassle and a scam to make someone mo' money from people
gullible enough to pay the interest. I was gullible once, I will *never* be
again.  :o)

Favourite racing games?

by Peter Hoope » Thu, 02 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Well, here goes my li'l ol' list:-

1) GPL
2) GP2
3) N2 (I have N3 & NL but haven't run them enough yet to include here
whereas N2 has taken up more hours of my time that I care to try to work
out....)
4) F1RS (Despite it's problems I had a lot of fun with this and although
also having MGPRS2 I found F1RS to be the most fun to drive.
5) Mobil Rally (R2000)
6) ICR2
7) SCGT
8) GP500
9) SBK
10) CPR
11) Indy500

The problem with trying to list these is that GPL has taken up so much of my
time over the last 14 months that the others have not gotten much of a look
in. Mobil Rally will move swiftly up the list I think once I really give a
longer run as will GP500. Looking forward to trying out SBK2000 when I pick
it up from EB on Friday.
