I can configure my accelerator and brake normally but in the game they are
assigned to buttons on the wheel?

You may need to re-assign the shift before re-assigning the gas/brake (I know
on my setup (T2), the shifters were initially assigned on the x-axis, and
 it wouldn't let me assign the gas/brake to those until I first re-assigned the shifter to button 1/2)
again, and then when you go in, it's fine.
