Had GPL running reasonably well on my machine (Dell p3, 1khz, 128 mb, ATI
rage 128) until I installed DirectX 8.1. Framerate is ok, but now it
freezes/warps - usually when the hard disk light is on. Tried changing the
hardware acceleration setting in dxdiag, but with no effect. Any ideas?
Would a better video card help?

Background tasks running? Virus checkers? etc.
