High Stakes only plays in burner

I have a 6x DVD and a 2x HP burner. I loaded NFS:hs from the dvd and went to
play and it tells me to load the game cd. If I put the cd in the burner it
will play, albeit slower loads.
I had to change the source drive in the registry to get it to look in the
burner. I reinstalled in the opposite pattern and it does the same thing. It
has to be in the burner to play! It is an original cd, not a copy. I am
trying to avoid unnecessary wear on my burner as they are rather expensive,
plus it is a lot slower. It will autorun in the dvd then ask for the cd.

Both drives are slaves to a hard disk.

I had a similar situation.  My CDRW is my F drive and my CD-ROM is my G drive.
Though I loaded the game from the G drive, I kept getting the game asking me to
insert the CD, even though I never took it out of the drive after installing
it!!

Since that drive is a 32X and can be replaced for 40-50$ when it dies, I would
much rather use up my MTBF on there than in my 400$ CDRW which only runs at 6X.
There is also the issue that the game takes forever to load a track with that
slow CD drive.

I went to EA's website and poked around in the technical support area and
discovereed this is a known issue, that the game will only look the the first CD
drive in the system  (based on letters).  One suggestion they had was to put an
audio CD in the first drive.  This didn't work for me and I am still having to
leave the CD in the slower CDRW.  EA claims that a solution is forthcoming.

If you right-click my computer, choose properties, select device
manager, then select your cd-rom drives, select properties, then
settings, there you can choose what drive letter to use, so you can
make your fastest drive the first cd-rom.

You can change the drive letter assignment for your CD-RW. Go to Control
panel - System - Device manager, select the cd-rw drive and click on
Properties. There you can enter a reserved drive letter on the Settings tab.
Just pick a drive letter that is ' greater than'  the one assigned to your
cd drive. You may have to reboot after doing this.
