In th UK we have been getting very poor reviews of Nascar 96 for the
Playstation.Being a real petrol head-what is the game like?
I can put up with "functional" graphics if the game is good-i.e.lots of
parameters to alter and tactics to consider.
Unfortunately the UK game press seem to dismiss any game with a bit of brain
power and cunning required.

The game gets slammed routinely for insufficiently flashy graphics,
but the gameplay depth is there... (It's basically NASCAR 1 on the
PSX, with graphics that are either between VGA and SVGA, or slightly
better than SVGA, depending on who you ask...)

Disclaimer: I worked on the product, so I'm probably not un-biased...

I have played Nascar96 for the playstation. Let me say that I was
impressed. One of the better games for the Playstation. The graphics are
much better and cleaner than in Nascar 1 for the PC. The only real
downfall of the game is a paintkit which is understandable with it being
a console based game.

Jim, if Flashy=speedy then you've pegged it.  Its not the flashiness
or lack thereof that's the problem, its the frame rate, plain and
simple.

It's not bad if you like 5 to 10 fps.

Its only one of the better games for the Playstation because its
NASCAR, pure and simple.  Unfortunately, the frame rate and overall
graphical appearance pales next to Formula One, Andretti Racing, Rally
Cross, and other PSX racers.  I wish Papyrus had taken more time and
perhaps gotten some help from outside the company on making the
graphics top-notch in terms of speed/resolution.  It has given many
PSX owners a bad impression of PC sims, and I think the thing that
worries me the most is that lackluster sales will be interpreted by
the Sierra brass as a lack of interest by PSX owners, whereas I think
its really more of a case of the graphics/speed paling in comparison
to other racers, so many would-be NASCAR fans never get deep enough
into it to appreciate the fine simulation underneath.

Btw, when I wrote a review of it for www.vidgames.com, the webmaster
placed it into the "simulation" category instead of the
"driving/racing" category -- and has not, in spite of my pleas,
corrected it.  That should show just how its looked at from the PSX
community.

What game were you playing? The one I was playing had very fast frame
rates, faster than N1.

Doesn't this version require a memory card?  If so, he may not have had
one plugged in.
