GPL, LWFF and CH Pedals

by Phil Le » Tue, 18 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I am now the proud owner of some CH Pedals as I had got fed up with the LWFF
standard pedals.

I've just tried setting them up and after some difficulty finally managed
it.  My system details are:

P2 400
64 Mb Ram
8Gb hard disk
Riva TNT 16 Mb with Detonator 3.69 drivers
SB Live 1024
Windows 98
DirectX 6.1
CH Pedals + Gravis Flightstick Pro plugged into SBLive 1024 gameport
LWFF plugged into USB port

The only way I could get them to work is to plug a joystick into them and
configure the joystick as a CH Flightstick Pro.  I ticked the option box for
rudder pedals and calibrated the controller.  With the switch on the pedals
set to "Car" I was able to get the pedals to work independently.  The pedals
and joystick were plugged into the gameport on my SB Live 1024 and the LWFF
was plugged into a USB port.

Is this the normal way of setting these pedals up?

Does anyone have any better ways of setting this configuration up?

Can the pedals be set up as a custom 2 axis device with no buttons and no
joystick plugged into them?  When I tried this myself, Windows 98 reported
that no device was connected.

When I run GPL I am able to calibrate both devices successfully using the
direct control option.  When I used the CH pedals, I get a range of motion
from 7 to 199.  This compares with the LWFF pedals going from 4 to 653.

Is that a normal range of motion for the CH pedals?

Right, I'm off to try to get used to the pedals.  My first few laps weren't
too good compared with the LWFF pedals but I'm sure all I need is a bit of
practice.

Cheers

GPL, LWFF and CH Pedals

Phil, swap the wiring harness from the Logitech pedals to the CH pedals.
It's a simple swap that works with all your sims and eliminates a great deal
of clutter from under the desk. See the Readers Reports section of Alison's
site for Steve Blankenship's report on the LWFF.

GPL, LWFF and CH Pedals

Wiring the ch pedal into the LWFF is fairly straight forward to do and
it is much better than the gameport. I have also a PDPI L4 in which I
have the CH Pedals connected to, but as you would guess it doesn't
work with all the other sims as they don't recognize two controllers.
But I am not playing anything else these days other than GPL,Q3,Ut
anyway.
But the reason for this post is that I have found a use for the
springs left in the LWFF pedals. I have taken both and attached
them to the CH Pedals, well brake pedal. I have drilled a hole through
the base of the brake pedal, and another one on the base just
underneath it. After some adjustment the 2 springs together work
wonders as a brake pedal. My braking now is so smooth and gradual.
The LWFF springs are perfect for this job as they "slot" on to the
base of the brake pedal and the base itself, then all you need is a
***or something to hold it in place. Now I have the squash ball on
the accelerator instead, in fact I have something much softer than a
squash ball. I think that you'll find that the springs on the ch
pedals are just too soft. By the way I wonder if the spring inside
them could be change for a stiffer one, I wonder if the plastic parts
would be strong enough.
Anyway just though I'd mentioned this as I am very pleased with my
setup at the moment.

Cheers.
